Welcome to the DFS Army NBA Free Squares article where I will try to break down my favorite NBA Free Squares for Today’s NBA Slate.
So what is a Free Square exactly? In NBA DFS there will be situations that come up that will lead to bench players getting more minutes or possibly ending up in the starting lineup. These players will often be priced as backups (their normal role). The expected increase in their minutes and role will give us someone we can plug into our lineups and comfortably expect them to reach or exceed value. The low cost of these players will allow us to spend up across the rest of our lineups and lock in some high dollar studs. On some nights, you may find some higher dollar players listed as well because the matchups may just be too good to ignore. Each day I’m going to list my 3 or 4 favorite Free Squares that I’m going to building my lineups around.

My Favorite NBA Free Squares for Today – October 18th
💥 Cameron Payne – CHI – PG
Kris Dunn is out, and so is Denzel Valentine tonight for the Bulls vs the Sixers. This will open up all the minutes Cameron Payne can handle as he’ll likely move into the Starting lineup tonight vs the Sixers. Payne is only 4,000 on Fanduel and he should be able to pay off this price pretty easily. If you look back to his numbers last year, he started 14 games, and average 9 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds in about 25 minutes per game. I’d be more than happy with a stat line like that tonight from a guy at this price point.
💥 Rodney McGruder – MIA – SG
The Heat are on a Back to Back tonight, and its likely that all 4 guys that missed last night will also miss tonight. We also have Dwyane Wade, on a back to back, the Heat may not run him as hard. All of this should open up some opportunities for Rodney McGruder. Josh Richardson took 21 shots last night, compared to McGruder’s 9 shots, so he’s not really the go to option. At min price, I think he’s worth the risk here tonight, and hopefully he’ll shoot better than the 22% he shot last night from the field.

💥 Bobby Portis – CHI – PF
Lauir Markkanen is out tonight and so is Kris Dunn for the Bulls, so Bobby Portis is expected to enter the starting lineup. With these two players off the floor last year, Portis had a 28% usage rate and average around 1.14 fantasy points per minute. He’s going to be a popular play tonight for sure, but for good reason given the injury situation for the Bulls. I’m not going to overthink this one in cash games, and I’ll probably be looking to pivot to someone else in GPP’s to differentiate myself.
💥 Josh Richardson – MIA – SF
As I said above the Heat are on a back to back tonight and we know they are more than likely not going to push Dwyane Wade hard, if he plays at all. That sets up a good spot for Richardson who led the team in shots last night, 21 and also lead the team in minutes with 38. With all the injuries this team has currently, along with the back to back situation, I’m expecting more of the same from Richarson tonight.

💥 LeBron James – LAL – SF
I’m not really sure what type of in depth analysis I can provide here. Its LeBron’s 1st offical game as a Laker, and you know he’s going to be jacked up for this game. His team is going to lean on him heavily tonight, and for the entire season to initiate a lot of the Offense for them. While I don’t expect them to “need” him to intiate every single offensive play like the Cavaliers needed him to last year, he’s still going to be heavily involved in this Offense. He’ll be surounded by much better talent this year, than last year in Cleveland as well, so I think he’ll be able to play much more free and lose compared to years past.

💥 Joel Embid + Ben Simmons – PHI – C, PG
With all the value listed above, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get Embid, Simmons, or both into your lineups tonight against the Bulls. The Sixers have the hieghest team total on the Slate at 116, and they have the 2nd highest team pace on the slate behind the Lakers. The Bulls are ranked 21st in the league vs Point Guards and 28th in the league against Centers. This is a prime spot for two studs tonight that we can easily pay up for.
