Welcome to the DFS Army NBA Free Squares artcle where I will try to break down my favorite NBA Free Squares for Todayās NBA Slate.
So what is a Free Square exactly? In NBA DFS there will be situations that come up that will lead to bench players getting more minutes or possibly ending up in the starting lineup. These players will often be priced as backups (their normal role). The expected increase in their minutes and role will give us someone we can plug into our lineups and comfortably expect them to reach or exceed value. The low cost of these players will allow us to spend up across the rest of our lineups and lock in some high dollar studs. On some nights, you may find some higher dollar players listed as well because the matchups may just be too good to ignore. Each day Iām going to list my 3 or 4 favorite Free Squares that Iām going to building my lineups around.

My Favorite NBA Free Squares for Today ā October 17th
Last night we got a little taste of the new NBA Season with the Sixers @ Celtics and the Thunder @ Warriors. Tonight however, we get the first real slate of the NBA Season with 11 games on the schedule. Iāll do my best to point you in the right direction with the players below.
š„ Alex Len ā ATL ā C
Dewayne Dedmon and John Collins are both out tonight so Alex Len should see all the minutes he can handle vs the Knicks tonight. Last year Len had a usage rate of around 15% with the Suns, so weāll have to wait a few games to see how much heās involved here with the Hawks this year. Iām not going to worry about that too much though, with his 5,100 price tage on Fanduel and his minutes in the 30ās i think this is a great matchup tonight and a good spot for us to save some money and fit in some studs elsewhere.
š„ Jimmy Butler ā MIN ā SF/SG (Draftkings)
Jimmy Butler is simply too cheap on Draftkings today, only priced at $6,700 heās got the highest price related upside on the slate for me. He played about 38 minutes per game last year, averaging right around 1.15 fantas points per minute. You know heās going to be motivated to showcase his talents after what happened in camp with the TāWolves. Last year, Jimmy Butler reached 5x value on this salary 65.7% of the time, and he has clear upside tonight, as he reached 6x value 52.2% of the time. The matchup with the Spurs is not ideal here, as they played at one of the slowest paces in the NBA last year, but this is a ābet on talentā play tonight here for me, heās simply too cheap on Draftkings.

š„ Kevin Knox ā NYK ā PF
We donāt know a lot about this kid, but, what we do know is that Kristaps Porzingis will be out for a few more months, dealing with his knee injury. Heās not really a ālock and loadā play this evening, because heās going to start the season coming off the bench, however, he did lead the team in Minutes and ranked 2nd on the team in Shot Attempts during the preseason. The Knicks seem to be very high on him, and weāve got him pegged around 25 minutes tonight in the NBA Research Staion so I expect him to have ample opportunity to pay off this price tonight.
š„ James Ennis ā HOU ā SF
The Rockets lost Trevor Ariza in the Offseason, but, picked up a capable replacement in James Ennis. He has bounced around the league for awhile, playing with the Pistons and the Grizzlies last year. Heās known for his ability to hit the outside shot so he should fit in well with this Rockets team who shoots more 3 pointers than 2 pointers. The Rockets have the highest team total on the slate at 120 and James Ennis is min price 3,500 on Fanduel. Heās a guy we should be able to safely plug in tonight, and expect him to reach value rather easily in this Offense. Also, if things donāt work out well and he tanks, donāt worry too much as Fanduel will drop our lowest score.

š„ Trey Burke ā NYK ā PG
I already know what youāre thinking, āAnother Knickā and I feel your pain for sure. However, we canāt ignore the value when it presents itself, and this spot for Burke is a prime value spot for us tonight. Heās a better value play on Fanduel, priced at only 4,900 vs 5,600 on Draftkings. Heās currently ranked as the #1 value play on the slate for Fanduel according to our NBA Research Staion. Burke played 36 games with the Knicks last year and managed a solid 25% usage rate and averaged 1.12 fanduel points per minute. Tonight without Emmanual Mudiay and with Courtney Lee doubtful, Trey Burke should be able to match those numbers and possibly exceed them. Last year Burke reached 5x value at this price 36.6% of the time, and he reached 6x value 26.8% of the time. If we can get 30-34 minutes out of him, we could be looking at close to 35-40 Fanduel points this evening.
š„ Montrez Harrell ā LAC ā PF
We currently have Harrell projected to play around 22 minutes tonight. This guy has shown to be a āpoint per minuteā player throughtout his career, and we can look all the way back to his days with the Rockets a few years ago, where he put up 1.13 fantasy points per minute, and also, last year when he averaged 1.20 fantasy points per minute with the Clippers. Despite not having a very high minutes projection, the price on Fanduel of 3,800 puts him fully in play for me as we look to load up everywhere else this evening. For what its worth, he reached 5x value on this price last year 48.2% of the time, and he reached 6x value 37.4% of the time.

š„ Luka Donic ā DAL ā SG
This kid looks like heās gonna be the real deal. Heās got the size and skills you would expect from an all around star in the NBA. Tonight the gets a matchup with the Suns who played at one of the fastest paces in the NBA last year. Luka and the Mavericks get a Pace (+/-) matchup of +5.4 what this means is, the Suns, play faster than the Mavericks, so this is a āpace upā spot for the Mavs. A higher pace should lead to more opportunities to acrue fantasy points for Luka and the rest of the Mavs this evening. The Shooting Guard Position is not super deep tonight, so if youāre not going all the way up to Harden, lock in Luka for what should be a solid High Floor High Ceiling spot.
