Searching For the Free Square
In the game of Bingo, every card gets an empty spot in the middle called the “Free Square”. Since it’s the middle square, the free square is essentially the ideal spot from which to build lines around. In DFS we define the Free Square as the player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate. This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Very often, this will be a low-cost player thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot, The goal of this column is to use quantitative data to identify the free square for the days Daily Fantasy Basketball slate. Each slate we will take a deep look at three or four players which represent outsized value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square

Tonight
We have a decent slate ahead of us for Wednesday night. The teams with the highest implied totals are as follows: Denver Nuggets (116), Los Angeles Lakers (116), New Orleans Pelicans (115). The highest priced players on the slate are Lebron James, Anthony Davis, and James Harden.
- Rajon Rondo PG/SG NOR ($6,400)
- Rajon Rondo and the New Orleans Pelicans will take on the Sacramento Kings on the road tonight. The Pelicans have an implied total sitting at right around 115-points and they are currently 5.5-point favorites. The Pelicans have been playing at a pace of right around 105.2 and the Kings have been playing at a pace of right around 98.3. It’s a significant pace down game for the Pelicans tonight but I still like the spot and price for Rondo tonight. Rondo is likely going to be guarded by D’Aaron Fox tonight who is a horrendous defender. Rondo has the following stats on the season so far this year: 25.3 MPG, 7.7. APG, .2 BLKPG, .9 STLPG, 7.9 PPG, 26.3 FPPG, and a 1.04 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 33.502 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.24x value. He is projected to play right around 31 minutes tonight. Rondo draws a great matchup tonight at a solid price. He has good FPPM numbers and I like the spot for him tonight. Load him up as a mid-tier guard on Draftkings tonight.
- Kyle Kuzma SF/PF LAL ($6,100)
- Kyle Kuzma and the Los Angeles Lakers will take on the Orlando Magic at home tonight. The Lakers have an implied total sitting at right around 116-points and they are currently 6.5-point favorites. The Lakers have been playing at a pace of right around 105.2 and the Magic have been playing at a pace of right around 101.6. This is going to be a pace down game for the Lakers tonight, but the Magic are not a slow team by any means. Kuzma is likely going to be guarded by Jonathan Simmons who is not a good defender at all. I am expecting a big offensive outing for Kuzma tonight. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 29.3 MPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.8 APG, .5 BLKPG, .6 STLPG, 15.3 PPG, 27.9 FPPG, and a .95 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 32.823 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.38x value. He is projected to play right around 34 minutes tonight. Great matchup for Kuzma tonight in what should be a fast high scoring game. Load him up as a mid-tier forward with upside tonight on Draftkings.
- Isaiah Thomas PG/SG LAL ($6,000)
- Isaiah Thomas and the Los Angeles Lakers will take on the Orlando Magic at home tonight. The Lakers have an implied total sitting at right around 116-points and they are currently 6.5-point favorites. As stated in the Kuzma write-up The Lakers have been playing at a pace of right around 105.2 and the Magic have been playing at a pace of right around 101.6. As you can tell I am really liking this game for fantasy purposes tonight. He is likely going to be coming off the bench tonight but he should thrive playing against a weak Kings bench. Thomas has the following stats on the season so far this year: 26.2 MPG, 1.9 RPG, 4.8 APG, .1 BLKPG, .5 STLPG, 15.4 PPG, 25.5 FPPG, and a .97 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 35.277 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.88x value. He is projected to play right around 30 minutes tonight. I think Isaiah has found a nice groove coming off the bench for the Lakers and I like his price tonight. Load him up as a mid-tier guard tonight on Draftkings.
