VicSearching For the Free Square
In the game of Bingo, every card gets an empty spot in the middle called the “Free Square”. Since it’s the middle square, the free square is essentially the ideal spot from which to build lines around. In DFS we define the Free Square as the player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate. This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Very often, this will be a low-cost player thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot, The goal of this column is to use quantitative data to identify the free square for the days Daily Fantasy Basketball slate. Each slate we will take a deep look at three or four players which represent outsized value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square

Let’s take a look at how our free squares did last night. Our first free square of the night was J.J. Barea who ended up with right around 25.50 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.3x value. Our second free square of the night was Dewayne Dedmon who ended up with right around 46.75 DKFP which was good enough for right around 9.7x value. Our final free square of the night was Josh Jackson who ended up with right around 33.75 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.4x value.

Tonight
We have a huge slate ahead of us for Wednesday night. The teams with the highest implied totals are as follows: Milwaukee Bucks (115), Denver Nuggets (114), and the Cleveland Cavaliers (114). The highest priced players on the slate are LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Anthony Davis.
- Cristiano Felicio PF/C CHI ($3,800)
- Cristiano Felicio and the Chicago Bulls will take on the Denver Nuggets at home tonight. The Bulls have an implied total sitting at right around 105-points and they are currently 9.5-point underdogs. The Bulls have been playing at a pace of right around 102.0 and the Nuggets have been playing at a pace of right around 100.7. Slight pace down game tonight for the Bulls, but its hard not to like the price and spot for Felicio tonight. He is likely going to be guarded by Nikola Jokic tonight who has been an average defender on the year. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 15.4 MPG, 3.2 RPG, .9 APG, .3 BLKPG, .2 STLPG, 4.8 PPG, 10.7 FPPG, and a .69 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 19.869 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.23x value. He is projected to play right around 29 minutes tonight. Felicio’s stats don’t jump off the page but he is going to get right around 30 minutes tonight at a price of $3,800. I like him as a value forward or center on Draftkings tonight.
- Jrue Holiday PG/SG NOR ($7,900) ***QUESTIONABLE***
- Jrue Holiday and the New Orleans Pelicans will take on the Indiana Pacers at home tonight. The Pelicans have an implied total sitting at right around 109-points and they are currently 1.0-point underdogs. The Pelicans have been playing at a pace of right around 104.9 and the Pacers have been playing at a pace of right around 99.4. It’s a pace down game for the Pelicans tonight but I like the spot for Holiday tonight. He is likely going to be guarded by Victor Oladipo tonight who is a solid defender. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 36.3 MPG, 4.4 RPG, 5.9 APG, .8 BLKPG, 1.4 STLPG, 19.1 PPG, 37.5 FPPG, and a 1.03 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that Holiday has a projection of right around 39.995 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.06x value. He is projected to play right around 37 minutes tonight. Holiday is questionable tonight so keep an eye on the injuries report. If he plays though I think he is going to have a solid game. He has been on an absolute tear lately and I think $7,900 is simply too low of a price for Holiday tonight even with a tough matchup. Load him up as a higher priced guard with upside tonight on Draftkings.
- Kevin Love PF/C CLE ($6,400)
- Kevin Love and the Cleveland Cavaliers will take on the Toronto Raptors tonight at home tonight. The Cavaliers have an implied total sitting at right around 114-points and they are currently 1.5-point favorites. The Cavaliers have been playing at a pace of right around 101.2 and the Raptors have been playing at a pace of right around 101.6. Slight pace up game for the Cavaliers tonight but both these teams play a solid pace. Love is likely going to be guarded by Jonas Valunciunas tonight who is a below average defender. Love has the following stats on the season so far this year: 27.5 MPG, 9.3 RPG, 1.7 APG, .4 BLKPG, .7 STLPG, 17.9 PPG, 35.4 FPPG, and a 1.29 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 34.69 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.42x value. He is projected to play 29 minutes tonight. Great matchup, underpriced, and elite FPPM numbers make Kevin Love a great play at either forward or center tonight on Draftkings.
