Searching For the Free Square
In the game of Bingo, every card gets an empty spot in the middle called the “Free Square”. Since it’s the middle square, the free square is essentially the ideal spot from which to build lines around. In DFS we define the Free Square as the player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate. This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Very often, this will be a low-cost player thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot, The goal of this column is to use quantitative data to identify the free square for the days Daily Fantasy Basketball slate. Each slate we will take a deep look at three or four players which represent outsized value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square
Tonight
We have a decent slate ahead of us for Monday night. The teams with the highest implied totals are as follows: Philadelphia 76ers (115), Cleveland Cavaliers (115), and Indiana Pacers (112). The highest priced players on the slate LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Draymond Green.

- Jeremy Lamb SG/SF CHA ($4,200)
- Jeremy Lamb and the Charlotte Hornets will take on the Philadelphia 76ers on the road tonight. The Hornets have an implied total sitting at right around 107-points and they are currently 8.5-point underdogs. The Hornets have been playing at a pace of right around 101.7 and the 76ers have been playing at a pace of right around 102.9. This is going to be a pace up game for the Hornets and Lamb who already play at a pretty good pace. Lamb is likely going to be guarded by J.J. Redick who is a terrible defender. Lamb has the following stats on the season so far this year: 24.3 MPG, 4.0 RPG, 2.2 APG, .4 BLKPG, .8 STLPG, 13.1 PPG, 23.8 FPPG, and a .98 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 31.291 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 7.45x value. He is projected to play 34 minutes tonight. Lamb has a great projection tonight and I think me makes an excellent value play on Draftkings tonight.
- Cameron Payne PG/SG CHI ($4,700)
- Cameron Payne and the Chicago Bulls will take on the New York Knicks on the road tonight. The Bulls have an implied total sitting at right around 107-points and they are currently 5.0-point underdogs. The Bulls have been playing at a pace of right around 101.9 and the Knicks have been playing at a pace of right around 100.6. Slight pace down game for the Bulls tonight but I still like the price and spot for him tonight. Payne is likely going to be guarded by Emmanuel Mudiay tonight who is an awful defender. I expect a solid offensive outing from Payne tonight in this matchup. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 20.1 MPG, 2.1 RPG, 3.8 APG, .3 BLKPG, 1.3 STLPG, 8.5 PPG, 20.1 FPPG, and a 1.0 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 29.528 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 6.28x value. He is projected to play right around 32 minutes tonight. Payne has a great matchup and should play a ton of minutes tonight. Load him up as a low priced guard with upside tonight.
- Nick Young SG GSW ($5,000)
- Nick Young and the Golden State Warriors will take on the San Antonio Spurs tonight on the road. The Warriors have an implied total sitting at right around 98-points and they are currently 7.0-point underdogs. The Warriors have been playing at a pace of right around 103.5 and the Spurs have been playing at a pace of right around 98.0. Significant pace down game for the Warriors tonight but I like the matchup for Young tonight. Young is likely going to be guarded by Patty Mills tonight who is a bad defender. Look for Young to have a good offensive outing against Mills tonight. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 15.5 MPG, 1.4 RPG, .4 APG, .1 BLKPG, .5 STLPG, 7.0 PPG, 11.1 FPPG, and .72 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 27.928 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.59x value. He is projected to play right around 35 minutes tonight. The Spurs are a great defensive team but Young draws the best matchup of the night. He is going to have to play a ton of minutes tonight which makes him a solid guard option on Draftkings tonight.
