Searching For the Free Square
In the game of Bingo, every card gets an empty spot in the middle called the “Free Square”. Since it’s the middle square, the free square is essentially the ideal spot from which to build lines around. In DFS we define the Free Square as the player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate. This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Very often, this will be a low-cost player thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot, The goal of this column is to use quantitative data to identify the free square for the days Daily Fantasy Basketball slate. Each slate we will take a deep look at three or four players which represent outsized value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square

Let’s take a look at how our free squares did this last night. Our first free square of the night was Jamal Crawford who ended up with right around 14.50 DKFP which was good enough for right around 3.8x value. Our second free square of the night was Nemanja Bjelica who ended up with right around 33.75 DKFP which was good enough for 7.2x value. Our final free square of the night was John Collins who ended up with right around 20.75 DKFP which was good enough for right around 3.5x value.

Tonight
We have a decent sized slate ahead of us for Tuesday night. The teams with the highest implied totals are as follows: Denver Nuggets (118), Cleveland Cavaliers (116), and the Charlotte Hornets (114). The highest priced players on the slate are Lebron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokic.
- Lou Williams PG/SG LAC ($7,200)
- Lou Williams and the Los Angeles Clippers will take on the Denver Nuggets tonight on the road. The Clippers have an implied total sitting at right around 113-points and they are currently 4.5-point underdogs. The Clippers have been playing at a pace of right around 102.0 and the Nuggets have been playing at a pace of right around 100.1. This is going to be a slight pace down game for the Clippers tonight but I still like the spot for Lou tonight. Lou is likely going to be coming off the bench tonight but as we know that has never stopped him from crushing value. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 32.3 MPG, 2.5 RPG, 5.4 APG, .2 BLKPG, 1.1 STLPG, 23.3 PPG, 37.2 FPPG, and 1.15 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 36.65 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.09x value. He is projected to play right around 33 minutes tonight. Lou has a solid FPPM and I expect him to see a ton of minutes tonight in what should be a high scoring game. Load him up as a higher priced guard with upside tonight on Draftkings.
- Gary Harris SG DEN ($6,000)
- Gary Harris and the Denver Nuggets are will take on the Los Angeles Clippers at home tonight. The Nuggets have an implied total sitting at right around 118-points and they are currently 4.5-point favorites. The Nuggets have been playing at a pace of right around 100.1 and the Clippers have been playing at a pace of right around 102.0. This is going to be a nice pace-up game for the Nuggets tonight in what is already a high scoring game. Harris is likely going to be guarded by Tyrone Wallace today who has been a decent defender. Harris has the following stats on the season so far this year: 34.5 MPG, 2.7 RPG, 3.1 APG, .3 BLKPG, 1.9 STLPG, 17.4 PPG, 29.8 FPPG, .86 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection 32.312 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.38x value. He is projected to play right around 35 minutes tonight. Like I stated in the Lou Williams write-up I think this is one of the best DFS games to target tonight. Harris has an affordable price and I like his upside tonight. Load him up as a shooting guard on Draftkings tonight.
- Denzel Valentine SG/SF CHI ($4,200)
- Denzel Valentine and the Chicago Bulls will take on the Charlotte Hornets on the road tonight. The Bulls have an implied total sitting at right around 104-points and they are currently 10.5 point underdogs. The Bulls have been playing at a pace of right around 102.1 and the Hornets have been playing at a pace of right around 101.6. Both of these teams play at relatively the same pace and they are both top 10 in the league. This is going to be a good game to target for fantasy purposes tonight. Denzel is likely going to be coming off the bench but he should see enough minutes to exceed value tonight. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 27.4 MPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.1 APG, .1 BLKPG, .7 STLPG, 9.8 PPG, 23.4 FPPG, and a .85 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 22.526 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.36x value. He is projected to play right around 22 minutes tonight. I think Denzel is going to see more than 22 minutes tonight and I like the spot he is in tonight. He’s coming off of a solid outing last night and I think he has another solid performance tonight. Load him up as a value guard or forward on Draftkings tonight.
