Searching For the Free Square
In the game of Bingo, every card gets an empty spot in the middle called the “Free Square”. Since it’s the middle square, the free square is essentially the ideal spot from which to build lines around. In DFS we define the Free Square as the player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate. This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Very often, this will be a low-cost player thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot, The goal of this column is to use quantitative data to identify the free square for the days Daily Fantasy Basketball slate. Each slate we will take a deep look at three or four players which represent outsized value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square

Tonight
We have a decent slate ahead of us for Monday night. The teams with the highest implied totals are as follows: Golden State Warriors (124), Los Angeles Clippers (114), and the Detroit Pistons (112). The highest priced players on the slate are Anthony Davis, Joel Embiid, and Andre Drummond.
- Pau Gasol PF/C SAS ($4,800)
- Pau Gasol and the San Antonio Spurs will take on the Utah Jazz tonight on the road. The Spurs have an implied total sitting at right around 97-points and they are currently 4.5-point underdogs. The Spurs have been playing at a pace of right around 97.2 and the Jazz have been playing at a pace of right around 98.5. Slight pace up game for the Spurs as they are the slowest team in the league. Gasol is likely going to be guarded by Rudy Gobert tonight who is a solid defender. Gasol has the following stats so far this season: 24.5 MPG, 8.3 RPG, 3.2 APG, 1.0 BLKPG, .3 STLPG, 10.6 PPG, 28.4 FPPG, and a 1.16 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 32.541 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 6.78x value. He is projected to play 28 minutes tonight. I know its a tougher matchup for Gasol tonight but I love his price. He has put up a pretty remarkable FPPM this season and if he gets around 25-30 minutes tonight I don’t see how he doesn’t crush value. Load up Gasol as a nice mid-tier forward or center tonight on Draftkings.
- Spencer Dinwiddie PG/SG BKN ($6,400)
- Spencer Dinwiddie and the Brooklyn Nets will take on the Los Angeles Clippers at home tonight. The Nets have an implied total sitting at right around 109-points and they are currently 4.5-point underdogs. The Nets have been playing at a pace of right around 102.9 and the Clippers have been playing at a pace of right around 101.7. This is a slight pace down game for the Nets tonight but the Clippers are not a slow team by any means. Dinwiddie is likely going to be guarded by Milos Teodosic who is a decent defender. Dinwiddie has the following stats on the season so far this year: 28.5 MPG, 3.3 RPG, 6.7 APG, .3 BLKPG, .8 STLPG, 13.7 PPG, 30.4 FPPG, and a 1.07 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 35.472 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.54x value. He is projected to play right around 30 minutes tonight. Dinwiddie has been one of my go-to DFS guys all year and I like the spot for him tonight. He has a solid price and is playing in a game that should be uptempo and high scoring. Load him up at either guard position of Draftkings tonight.
- Kevon Looney SF/PF GSW ($3,200)
- Kevon Looney and the Golden State Warriors will take on the Phoenix Suns at home tonight. The Warriors have an implied total sitting at right around 124-points and they are currently 15.0-point favorites. The Warriors have been playing at a pace of right around 103.6 and the Suns have been playing at a pace of right around 103.1. Both of these teams play extremely fast which makes this game a gold mine from a DFS perspective tonight. Bertans is likely going to be guarded by Dragan Bender tonight who is an abysmal defender. Looney has the following stats on the season so far this year: 11.1 MPG, 2.9 RPG, .6 BLKPG, .2 STLPG, 3.1 PPG, 8.9 FPPG, and a .81 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 23.313 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 7.29x value. He is projected to play right around 28 minutes tonight. Looney is likely going to be in the starting lineup which means he should see a good amount of minutes for pretty much being minimum salary. Don’t overthink this one and load up Looney as a great value forward tonight on Draftkings.
