Searching For the Free Square
In the game of Bingo, every card gets an empty spot in the middle called the “Free Square”. Since it’s the middle square, the free square is essentially the ideal spot from which to build lines around. In DFS we define the Free Square as the player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate. This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Very often, this will be a low-cost player thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot, The goal of this column is to use quantitative data to identify the free square for the days Daily Fantasy Basketball slate. Each slate we will take a deep look at three or four players which represent outsized value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square

Tonight
We have a decent sized slate ahead of us for Wednesday night. The teams with the highest implied totals are as follows: Charlotte Hornets (113), Houston Rockets (112), and the Philadelphia 76ers (112). The highest priced players on the slate are DeMarcus Cousins, James Harden, and Anthony Davis.
- Montrezl Harrell PF/C LAC ($4,700)
- Montrezl Harrell and the Los Angeles Clippers will take on the Boston Celtics tonight at home. The Clippers have an implied total sitting at right around 109-points and they are currently 1.0-point favorites. The Clippers have been playing at a pace of right around 101.6 and the Celtics have been playing at a pace of right around 99.2. This will be a slight pace-down game for the Clippers tonight. Harrell is likely going to be coming off the bench tonight but he should see decent minutes with DeAndre Jordan injured. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 15.2 MPG, 3.9 RPG, .7 APG, .6 BLKPG, .4 STLPG, 8.7 PPG, 16.2 FPPG, and a 1.07 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 29.199 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 6.21x value. He is projected to play right around 30 minutes tonight. Harrell has some really solid FPPM numbers and if he gets the minutes which I think he will tonight he should crush value. Load him up as a lower priced forward or center with some upside tonight on Draftkings.
- Ben Simmons PG/SF PHI ($7,600)
- Ben Simmons and the Philadelphia 76ers will take on the Chicago Bulls tonight at home. The 76ers have an implied total sitting at right around 112-points and they are currently 5.5-point favorites. The 76ers have been playing at a pace of right around 104.7 and the Bulls have been playing at a pace of right around 102.2. Both of these teams like to play fast which makes this a great fantasy game to target tonight. Simmons will likely be guarded by Justin Holiday who is a below average defender. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 35.0 MPG, 7.9 RPG, 7.2 APG, .9 BLKPG, 1.9 STLPG, 16.3 PPG, 41.4 FPPG, and a 1.18 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 45.463 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.98x value. He is projected to play right around 35 minutes tonight. Simmons is in a great spot tonight in what should a pace up and high scoring game. Load him up as either a higher priced guard or forward tonight on Draftkings.
- Dejounte Murray PG SAS ($4,800)
- Dejounte Murray and the San Antonio Spurs will take on the Memphis Grizzlies tonight on the road. The Spurs have an implied total sitting at 96-points and they are currently 1.0-point underdogs. The Spurs have been playing at a pace of right around 97.4 and the Grizzlies have been playing at a pace of right 97.0. Pace isn’t really going to be much a factor as these are the two slowest pace teams in the NBA. Murray is likely going to be guarded by Tyreke Evans tonight who is a pretty solid defender. Murray has the following stats on the season so far this year: 18.4 MPG, 5.0 RPG, 2.5 APG, .3 BLKPG, 1.0 STLPG, 6.7 PPG 18.6 FPPG, and a 1.01 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 28.2 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.87x value. He is projected to play right around 32 minutes tonight. The matchup might not look the best on paper but sometimes the price is too good to pass up. I still think Murray is priced to low tonight and he makes a solid cheaper point guard play on Draftkings tonight.
