Searching For the Free Square
In the game of Bingo, every card gets an empty spot in the middle called the “Free Square”. Since it’s the middle square, the free square is essentially the ideal spot from which to build lines around. In DFS we define the Free Square as the player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate. This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Very often, this will be a low-cost player thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot, The goal of this column is to use quantitative data to identify the free square for the days Daily Fantasy Basketball slate. Each slate we will take a deep look at three or four players which represent outsized value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square

Tonight
We have a shorter sized slate ahead of us for Tuesday night. The teams with the highest implied totals are as follows Cleveland Cavaliers (110), Phoenix Suns (110), and the Atlanta Hawks (108). The highest priced players on the slate are Lebron James, Devin Booker, and Kevin Love.
Free Squares
- George Hill PG/SG SAC ($4,600)
- George Hill and the Sacramento Kings will take on the Charlotte Hornets tonight at home. The Kings have an implied total sitting at right around 101-points and they are currently 4.0-point underdogs. The Kings have been playing at a pace of right around 97.4 and the Hornets have been playing at a pace of right around 102.2. This is going to be a significant pace up game for the Kings tonight which should boost Hill’s fantasy output a decent amount tonight. He is likely going to be guarded by Kemba Walker tonight who is a middling defender. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 27.0 MPG 3.0 RPG, 2.7 APG, .3 BLKPG, .9 STLPG, 10.1 PPG, 20.2 FPPG, and a .75 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 23.705 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.15x value. He is projected to play right around 30 minutes. There is not a ton of value on this slate tonight and I don’t you can go wrong by using George Hill tonight. He is is a pace-up game, has an affordable price, and is in a good match-up tonight. Load him up as a value guard on Draftkings tonight.
- Kawhi Leonard SF/PF SAS ($6,700) ***QUESTIONABLE***
- Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs will take on the New York Knicks tonight on the road. The Spurs have an implied total sitting at right around 103-points and they are currently 5.0-point favorites. The Spurs have been playing at a pace of right around 97.1 and the Knicks have been playing at a pace of right around 99.7. This will be a nice pace up game for the Spurs tonight who are one of the slowest teams in the league. Kawhi is likely going to be guarded by Lance Thomas who is just an average defender. Kawhi has the following stats on the season so far this year: 20.2 MPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.7 APG, .8 BLKPG, 1.0 STLPG, 13.5 PPG, 24.3 FPPG, and a 1.20 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 35.297 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.27x value. He is projected to play right around 28 minutes tonight. Kawhi is questionable tonight but if he is a go I like him in this spot tonight. Keep an eye on the injury report but if Kawhi is in tonight load him up as a mid-tier forward on Draftkings tonight.
- Dennis Schroder PG ATL ($7,300)
- Dennis Schroder and the Atlanta Hawks will take on the Phoenix Suns tonight on the road. The Hawks have an implied total sitting at right around 108-points and they are currently 2.0-point underdogs. The Hawks have been playing at a pace of right around 100.4 and the Suns have been playing at a pace of right around 104.2. This is going to be a significant pace up game for the Hawks and Schroder tonight for a team that already plays relatively fast. Schroder is likely going to be matched up against Tyler Ulis tonight who is a terrible defender and guy Schroder should be able to dominate tonight. He has the following stats on the season so far this year: 32.2 MPG, 3.0 RPG, 6.8 APG, 1.1 STLPG, 19.8 PPG, 35.5 FPPG, and a 1.10 FPPM. Taking a look at our Domination Station we can see that we have a projection of right around 38.691 DKFP which would be good enough for right around 5.3x value. He is projected to play right around 34 minutes tonight. This is a dream match-up for Schroder and the Hawks tonight. I expect a big game out of Schroder tonight and the Domination Station agrees. Load Schroder up as a higher priced point guard with a ton of upside tonight.
