Draft Turkey Day Extravaganza – 3 Man contests by UW81

This week in celebration of Thanksgiving, we’re undoing the button on our pants and going wider today looking at 3-Man draft strategies for the greatest slate of the NFL season: Thanksgiving Day football. It’s a time for families, food, and football and for me, a rare day to watch all the games end to end.

First off, congrats to DFS Army Member kdmyrick71 for taking down 1st place in the $400k Mon NBA Clutch Shot on FanDuel last night winning $100,000 using the DFS Army Domination Station NBA Lineup Optimizer.  He also took down the $30K Mon NBA Pick ‘n Roll for another $3,000 with the same lineup.

Draft is running a special promo this through tomorrow where if you deposit $100, you get a free $10 ticket. Click through here for yours today and a free month access to our premium content at DFSArmy.com

The three-man format has some special tournaments running this week on Draft and we want to take advantage of it while there’s still football left. They’re offering an affordable multi-week tournament at $0.25 and other 3 man tournaments for the slate.

General strategy:

  • Deviating from our normal strategies, we’re going to be going for payer value vs. positional value this slate. Adding in a third person means 1x QB, 2x RB, and 2x Receivers are going off the board on a slate that has 3 games instead of 11 or 13. It adds another dimension of complexity going to the 5-6 perceived strength player instead of 4.
  • There are limited targets at each position this week outside of QB making player talent drafting more impactful.
  • We’re still trying to limit one player to one offense for exposure, but it’s pretty difficult this week unless you dig deeper into positional strength

Draft order: This is my core and what I’m working with for the slate.

Rank Player
1 Gordon
1 Thielen
3 Tate
4 Perine
5 Cousins
6 Allen
7 Morris
8 Diggs
9 Murray
10 Davis
11 McKinnon
12 Darkwa
13 Stafford
13 Prescott
13 Keenum

Draft Strategy:

Picking First:

Ah, a fresh draft. You have your choice of anyone on the slate. Personally, I’m going with Gordon of Thielen and subscribing to the late round QB draft theory. Most of the players in the pool I’ve faced have grabbed Cousins first. Here’s my problem with that. If you’re picking first, that means your next picks are 6th and 7th. You’re outside of the top 2 clear options for RB and into uncomfortable land in WR where you’ll need to make difficult decisions that could be avoided. Going Gordon or Thielen gives you a higher floor with your 6th and 7th picks plus a flatter exposure so you’re ending up with a QB+WR stack at most.

Picking Second:

This spot is always weird and the worst spot to be in. You’ll have to do reactionary drafting based on what you see from 1 and 3. The nice thing is you’re guaranteed a top stud in WR or RB, the bad thing is your next pick is #5. If Cousins hasn’t been grabbed by 5, lock him in. If he has, look at picking the opposite position form your first pick. So if you grabbed Gordon, grab a WR. No need to reach for a QB this early if Cousins is off the board.

Picking third:

This is the sweet spot. You’re grabbing two prime picks here for sure. You get to see the direction your opponents are going and have the ability to cut them off. Picks 9 and 10 will be about grabbing positional dominance. What does this mean? By now at least one of your opponents have locked out a position, and it’s usually been WR. This means there’s more value in RB that’s been left on the table since the bottom 5-6 picks for both WR and RB and coin flips this week. This usually means you’ll be able to grab either a RB or WR that should have been drafted earlier but fell to you. You’re generally going to have the ability to grab your QB of choice if you want to instead at this point (outside of Cousins).

UW’s preferred play of the slate:

The Gobbler king himself, Matt Stafford. I have no reasoning outside the fact that his profile picture is a turkey this week and he always steps it up for Thanksgiving. Sometimes you just go with your gut in DFS.
