Greetings, DFS Army! Josh Thomas here, also known as DFSUpNorth, ready to guide you through a detailed and comprehensive preview of the 2023 3M Open held at the spectacular TPC Twin Cities!

Nestled in the heart of Blaine, Minnesota, TPC Twin Cities is a gem of a course, boasting an exceptional layout that seamlessly blends natural beauty and strategic challenge. Having transitioned from hosting the Champions Tour’s 3M Championship to becoming part of the PGA Tour in 2019, this course has quickly gained a reputation for its thrilling risk-reward dynamic. With a design handcrafted by golf legend Arnold Palmer and Minnesota’s own Tom Lehman, the TPC Twin Cities offers a unique test that will surely demand the best from the world’s top golfers.

In this article, we’ll dive deep into the nuances of the course, key statistics for success, memorable historical moments, and important factors that could sway your DFS picks. So, buckle up, DFS Army, as we embark on our tour of TPC Twin Cities, the proud host of the 2023 3M Open.

The Course:

TPC Twin Cities, located in Blaine, Minnesota, is a par-71 layout stretching just over 7,400 yards. The course, designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer and Minnesota native Tom Lehman, opened in 2000.

Since opening, TPC Twin Cities quickly gained prestige and became a popular stop on the Champions Tour. With its transition to the PGA Tour in 2019, the course has garnered even more acclaim. It’s worth noting that the course record, a dazzling 60, was set by Paul Goydos during the 3M Championship on the Champions Tour.

Architectural Influence

Designed by Arnold Palmer and Tom Lehman, TPC Twin Cities reflects their philosophy of creating enjoyable yet challenging golf experiences. The strategic placement of hazards, particularly water, forces players to think carefully about their club selection and shot execution.

Lehman, a Minnesota native, also made modifications to the course to prepare it for the 3M Open, adding length and narrowing fairways to provide a sufficient challenge for PGA Tour professionals. His understanding of the local conditions and how they impact the course’s playability is reflected in the design.

Design Features

TPC Twin Cities features bentgrass fairways and greens, and Kentucky bluegrass rough, which can be particularly challenging if it becomes thick and lush. The greens are often large and feature moderate undulation, placing a premium on both distance control with approach shots and solid lag putting.

Water Hazards

Water hazards are a defining feature at TPC Twin Cities, as they come into play on 14 of the 18 holes. This includes several forced carries off the tee and on approach shots. The 3rd, 7th, and 18th holes, in particular, have water in play on virtually every shot. These hazards not only increase the course’s difficulty but also heighten its beauty.

Par-3s

The par-3s at TPC Twin Cities offer variety and challenge. The 4th hole is a lengthy par-3 that can play over 200 yards and features water to the left of the green. The 8th hole, on the other hand, is a shorter par-3 but is heavily guarded by bunkers. The 13th and 17th holes also feature water hazards, requiring precise tee shots.

Impact of Renovations

In preparation for its PGA Tour debut in 2019, TPC Twin Cities underwent significant renovations to enhance its challenge. Fairways were narrowed, rough was grown out, and additional yardage was added, notably lengthening some of the par-5s and par-3s. These changes created a sterner test for the world’s top players and further emphasized the importance of strategic play.

Strokes Gained: Key Statistics

When navigating TPC Twin Cities, consider these vital areas:

  1. Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (SG:OTT) – The course is relatively long, and there are several holes where being longer off the tee is an advantage.
  2. Strokes Gained: Approach (SG:APP) – The course features water hazards on a majority of its holes, making accuracy on approach shots crucial.
  3. Strokes Gained: Putting (SG:P) – As we’ve seen in past editions, the player who gets hot with the putter often finds success at TPC Twin Cities.

Course Fit and Player Profiles

While length off the tee can be an advantage at TPC Twin Cities, the course has shown that it can suit different types of player profiles. Shot-makers who can shape their ball off the tee and avoid the water hazards tend to fare well here.

Accuracy on approach shots is also crucial due to the amount of water on the course, and the large greens place a premium on solid putting.
