NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 1/6/23

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

This is a medium sized yet gross slate with no major superstars playing in it. Like always I will give my 2 favorite stacks, but my secondary options also have high upside as well. My secondary options include the Panthers top line against the Red Wings, followed by the Capitals at home against Nashville. Nashville and Washington are both coming off of wins and are both on the second leg of a back to back; however, the Capitals had a much easier time than the Predators last night, especially on defense. The Sharks are also a nice stack against the lowly Ducks. These California games can get weird sometimes, and I don’t think Anaheim wants to win too many games, so we shall see if John Gibson plays or not. Either way, Timo Meier, Tomas Hertl, and the boys are a decent tertiary stack if you are looking to avoid some of the bigger names. Connor Hellebuyck is probably the best goalie play on this slate, assuming he plays.

Correlated Snipe #1

Patrick Kane – Max Domi – Seth Jones

The Blackhawks get to face the Coyotes on the second leg of a back to back, which is always a good sign for their opposition. Connor Ingram is already confirmed as the starting goalie for the Yotes, and he is not a real NHL caliber goalie. The Coyotes just got destroyed by the lowly Flyers last night, who usually also hit the other team hard. Kane has simply been super dangerous forever, even when the team around him has sucked. Given the situation and the slate and whatnot, I am simply going to take the Blackhawks top line with Patrick Kane; and obviously I threw in Seth Jones, simply because he is one of the highest ceiling defensemen on the slate. Tired teams take penalties and the Yotes should be tire. Let’s capitalize on Jones and Kane who typically run their powerplay.

Correlated Snipe #2

Mason McTavish – Adam Henrique – Troy Terry

Troy Terry is the Ducks primary goal scoring option and Henrique is overall just a decent player; but with that being said, Mason McTavish is the main story here. The kid has impressed as of late, and the Ducks are giving him a real shot at the top line. Zegras is insanely talented but production doesn’t always dazzle; therefore McTavish and his super direct game is getting the promotion. This top line also correlates on the powerplay. Oh yeah, and the Sharks suck too. Their defense is old and slow, and their goalie Kahkonen is simply having an atrocious season.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Michael Rasmussen – If it holds firm, Rasmussen should still be on the Wings top line and top powerplay unit. Pretty cheap, and the 6’6 power-forward could give the weak Panthers defense a tough time.

Grinder #2

Kevin Labanc – Usually a top 6 role and top powerplay guy for the Sharks. I would take the over on this game, so Labanc is one of the safer cheap options around.
