What’s up, everyone?! Welcome to the first NASCAR Cup Series preview of the 2020 season. I am beyond ready for the year to get started so let’s get going. The first race of the 2020 NASCAR season is an exhibition race run at Daytona International Speedway. The Busch Clash is an exclusive field that consists of 2019 Pole Winners, part Busch Clash winners, past Daytona 500 pole and race winners, and 2019 playoff drivers. To be eligible you must have competed full-time in the Cup Series during the 2019 season. This will give us an excellent field of elite drivers to battle it out. Let’s take a quick look at the 18 drivers who will be racing in the Busch Clash.
#1-Kurt Busch
#2-Brad Keselowski
#3-Austin Dillon
#4-Kevin Harvick
#6-Ryan Newman
#9-Chase Elliott
#10-Aric Almirola
#11-Denny Hamlin
#12-Ryan Blaney
#14-Clint Bowyer
#18-Kyle Busch
#19-Martin Truex, Jr.
#20-Erik Jones
#22-Joey Logano
#24-William Byron
#42-Kyle Larson
#48-Jimmie Johnson
#88-Alex Bowman
*Daniel Hemric and Daniel Suarez were both eligible to compete, however, they do not have an available ride for the race.
DFS Outlook
Due to the small field size, DFS pricing will be very spread out making most lineup combinations playable. You will be looking to get the right combination of place differential, top finishers and if applicable, the race dominator. There are only 75 laps total in this race however meaning it will be difficult for anyone to truly separate themselves with the laps led. In the last few years, this race has typically seen one driver lead a lot of laps early before everything gets serious late in the race. One thing to keep in mind though is this will be the first Busch Clash with the new rules package and only the second Daytona race using it. The new package which allows cars to get better drafting runs makes passing easier. I expect drivers to be a little more aggressive overall using this race as a test session for next Sunday’s Daytona 500. The amount of DNF’s varies massively here with some years seeing only 1 or 2 while others see 10-12. Very hard to predict whether this race will see tons of crashes or be relatively tame. Be flexible when making lineups for this race.
The DFS Army research station is going to be the best place to find all the Daytona and Busch Clash data to help give you the edge on the competition.
