NHL DFS: Picks, Projections, Ownership, Rankings, Tips for Winning Lineups 12/5

The NHL DFS slate for 12/5 brings us a nice sized slate at 6 games. This slate is a bit more wide open than usual because it’s missing 9 of the top 10 offensive teams (over the last 3 week sample size).  There will still be scoring, but it might be a little less predictable as to where it’s coming from. If you are wondering, the Boston Bruins are the top 10 team on the slate, but they are facing a top third defense in the Vegas Golden Knights (a slightly tougher matchup than usual).

Let’s look at the players we should focus on, and who we might pair with them from other teams.

We have lots of great options for correlating in tournaments, value plays for cash games, and overall ceiling plays that can break a slate.  Let’s analyze some of the best plays offered by optimizers for today’s slate on either Draftkings or Fanduel.  And, our VIPs can head into our hockey forums to discuss sensible, strategic pivots if these plays look vulnerable.

For more detailed analysis, our Domination Station Optimizer is loaded with both player and ownership projections.  And, our NHL Cheatsheets deliver tournament-winning leverage plays from our other NHL coaches in addition to this quick-hitting slate starter.

May 8, 2021; Edmonton, Alberta, CAN; Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid (97) celebrates his 100th point of the season on a goal by forward Leon Draisaitl (29) against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place. Mandatory Credit: Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

Center – Bo Horvat (VAN)

7 shots on goal and 2 goals later, Bo Horvat had a game vs ARI last time out posting 31.8 Draftkings fpts.  He seems to be a boom or bust tournament type piece either giving you crumbs or nearly 5x his salary…not a lot of in between his last dozen or so games.  Horvat, and the Canucks as a unit, are in ceiling matchups tonight facing the Canadiens…and the optimizers love VAN skaters early!

Wing – Conor Garland (VAN)

Value is the name of the NHL DFS game, and Conor Garland is priced all the way down under 3k ($2900) tonight.  He hasn’t done much lately, but he also doesn’t need to do much tonight to pay off.  Back his way into an assist, maybe get a couple shots on goal, and he smashes his price point…and if you are going to play the next couple guys, you are going to need a sensible punt to make it fit.

Wing – Leon Draisaitl (EDM)

Draisaitl and McDavid (or both in cash games) are usually the debate of any slate. This tends to happen when the #1 and #2 goal scorers on the season are on the same team and same power play unit.  I’ll take the savings with Draisaitl tonight (justifying the fact I flipped a coin and got tails), but Leon also hits a ceiling easier being cheaper.  Both Draisaitl and McDavid have been paying off the last four games or so.  Leon has 5 goals in his last four games, and has scored in 5 consecutive games as well while averaging over 3 shots per game very consistently.  McDavid is similar with 5 goals in four games, but only scored in four consecutive.  But, he shoots a ton, too, posting 21 shots over this span.  It really is a coin flip.  I’m taking the savings and likely lower ownership.

Wing – Alexander Ovechkin (WSH)

No one is going to talk about the Washington Capitals tonight, but using Alex Ovechkin as a 1-off is rarely a bad play, even in cash games.  He camps on dots with his mouth open screaming, “FEED ME!” every night.  Edmonton is typically prone to counterattacks and ranks just outside the bottom 10 defenses over the last 3 weeks, allowing just over 3.5 goals per game.

Ovi has scored near 20 Draftkings points in 5 of his last 8 games….showing some consistency.  And, he has pushed the scoring over 35 pts once showing a slate-breaking ceiling we know exists.  Don’t let him slip completely under you radar tonight.  He’s a gpp-winner if your stacks hit and he’s your 1-off on a multi-goal outing.

NHL DFS Stacks for Tonight

Vancouver is facing a weaker defense in the Montreal Canadiens making them an optimizer’s top target and a great stack. Bo Horvat and Elias Petterson both had solid games last time out. Stacking either line or the power play units is fine.  If making multiple lineups, mixing and matching (and learning out to set an optimizer up to deliver that strategy) is a great way to cover multiple winning options on a less predictive slate.

After seeing a lot of Vancouver, I start seeing Calgary Flames pop into our secondary stacks against the Arizona Coyotes tonight.  People fail to realize the Coyotes aren’t just a defense to walk over and default stack against. Calgary has weapons and makes sense tonight, but for how many people will likely just blindly stack them up, I might look for alternatives with similar explosive power at lower ownership.

Enter Edmonton Oilers stacks (especially that power play) and Boston Bruins stacks (again…especially that power play).  The power plays get you a little off the herd stacking just top lines, but if you focus on Vancouver value players like VAN2, you might find an easier time getting these expensive stacks in your lineups.  These strategies aren’t super sneaky, nor are they overthought.  Just the way we like to play NHL DFS…slightly under the radar.  Too many players try too hard to get cute and just render themselves dead money…they are our edge!
