NHL DFS: Picks, Projections, Ownership, Rankings, Tips for Winning Lineups 12/2

The NHL DFS slate for 12/2 brings us 3 games as the NHL and NBA scheduling committees love alternating big, small, big, small all week through their sports.  Frustrating as it is….it is what it is.  Tonight is all about the Winnipeg Jets.  Different team, but same chant….say it with me!  J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!!

Let’s look at the players we should focus on, and who we might pair with them from other teams.

We have lots of great options for correlating in tournaments, value plays for cash games, and overall ceiling plays that can break a slate.  Let’s analyze some of the best plays offered by optimizers for today’s slate on either Draftkings or Fanduel.  And, our VIPs can head into our hockey forums to discuss sensible, strategic pivots if these plays look vulnerable.

For more detailed analysis, our Domination Station Optimizer is loaded with both player and ownership projections.  And, our NHL Cheatsheets deliver tournament-winning leverage plays from our other NHL coaches in addition to this quick-hitting slate starter.

Wing – Kyle Connor (WPG)

Perhaps the most prolific pure scorer on the slate tonight, Kyle Connor should be “good chalk.”  Capable of leading the league in goals and shots, Connor is a slate-breaker any given night.  Tonight’s opponent, the Columbus Blue Jackets, have allowed 4.1 goals against on the year…..only the Anaheim Ducks have allowed more.  So, Connor is in a very positive NHL DFS matchup tonight.  He has reached 2.5x value in six of his last ten games, and even when he falls short of “value” he usually posts at least some points due to having one if the highest shot floors in all of the NHL.  Kyle Connor is a lock button play for me on tonight’s limited slate.

Wing – Blake Wheeler (WPG)

This one is a toss-up between Wheeler and center Mark Scheifele.  Wheeler breaks the tie for me through his recency (three great games in a row) where he has a hat trick, but more importantly, he has 5 assists in those games for $1000 less in Fanduel salary when compared to Scheifele.  Scheifele has the shot floor, but hasn’t quite produced results like Wheeler.  Both give you a little cross-line coverage with Connor to stabilize your lineup for non-tournament formats while overlapping Connor on the power play.  Either choice is fine…I just prefer Wheeler tonight.

Wing – Chris Kreider (NYR)

Kreider is another potential NHL DFS slate-breaker and league-wide top pure shooter/scorer.  He makes for a quality pivot off the chalky Connor, but I don’t see a reason with two cheaper defensemen that you couldn’t get both studs in your lineups tonight.  The Rangers have struggled to score goals lately, ranking 24th in the league with an average of just 2.79 goals for per game over three weeks.  Their opponent, Ottawa, isn’t a strong team, but they aren’t giving up a ton of goals lately either…making this a mediocre matchup on paper.  But, we don’t have a lot of choices tonight and have to take some subpar matchups because they are still some of the better matchups we are being offered.

Kreider is the lead option, though, posting four goals in his last five games on a very solid 33 shots in his last 10 games.  Shot floor, shot floor, shot floor when you have little else to watch on a night.

Defense – Josh Morrissey (WPG)

You aren’t reading this article for frequent, sneaky and low-owned plays.  Sure, you will find some here and there, but this piece is more about giving you explanations to the why’s behind optimizers falling in love with certain plays on the night.  You can make up your mind if you like the optimizer’s suggestions or not.

That said, Josh Morrissey offers us a conundrum tonight.  We want to load up on Jets, that should be obvious (including the possibility of goalie Connor Hellebuyck as a stack piece).  Morrissey is riding a solid wave of his own right now anchoring the top line and top power play.  He has actually brought perhaps better “value” for his price than the aforementioned Kyle Connor and/or Blake Wheeler.  Morrissey has logged at least 6.5 fpts in 10 of his last 11 games, 15+ fpts in 8 of the 11.  He has reached a ceiling of 25+ fpts four times in this stretch and is still underpriced for his recent production and matchup tonight.  If you built around a core of Connor/Morrissey/Kreider then either Wheeler/Scheifele, you have a very strong foundation.  Your only restriction is salary from there on out.

NHL DFS Stacks for Tonight

Would it shock you if I led with WPG1 or PP1 tonight?  This is the stack the optimizers should be forcing down your throat all day.  When I see that, I’m almost always looking for reasons to fade it for something else, especially in a volatile sport like NHL DFS, but tonight, I’m more inclined to just roll it out.  I can’t find a lot wrong with it other than potential bad luck.  High shots, high production, somewhat fair pricing….sometimes we need to minimize our fancy play syndrome and just do what’s right.

The optimizers are heading into New York next with Rangers stacks.  Reaching for value, the common players are coming off some version of NYR2 or PP2 (with the occasional sprinkle of Vincent Trocheck).  Cheaper names like centerman, Filip Chytil, winger Kaapo Kakko, and defensemen K’Andre Miller and/or Ryan Lindgren are pairing in with Jets like crazy.  This might be a chalky way to go, but NYR isn’t exactly an explosive scoring team currently.

After you see Rangers, you start seeing a smattering of New York Islanders stacks.  The Isles might actually be the better matchup as they contain more scoring punch right now than Rangers stacks.  However, Nashville is a defensive team and typically keeps games lower scoring.  The advantage here is that Nashville played last night and might be a little tired…but that’s also a gamble.

This slate offers nothing beyond Winnipeg Jets.  That’s not to say nothing else will go off and win a tournament for you.  This is also not to say Winnipeg can’t fall flat.  The takeaway here is that the Jets are your NHL DFS team on paper to build around, tonight’s results aside, and everything else is a bit wide open where you might just pick a stack and go with it…..or you might instead 1off your way around the slate and hope to cherry-pick the producers flying solo.
