MLB DFS Main Slate Advice | Picks, Stacks, Strategy Projections Today June 5th | Fanduel Draftkings

Hello again everybody, and welcome to today’s MLB Full Count breakdown! I’m nilly and I run the carnage report and DraftKings tiers tools. I also coach NASCAR, so be sure to check us out every weekend over there, too. We get a lone showdown game followed by a 7-game main slate, which is a little different than the usual short-slate day. None of them start until mid-afternoon, so for those of you that always miss the early bird small slates, you’ll get to enjoy one today. There’s still plenty to cover, so let’s get to it!

A look at pitchers

There aren’t a ton of great options today, and this being a short-slate day doesn’t make that any better. Nola and/or Snell would probably work for basic cash duties, though there are some others that look more interesting to me for tournament use, such as Garrett with his slate-best KSCORE (or even his PLR opponent, who may make some noise with at his reduced salary). As always be sure to check out the coach’s notes page to see who they are most interested in.

Congrats to DFS Army coach Razzle on his sweet $50,000 win this weekend!!

Early game

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox

We’ll kick things off with our early showdown game between the Rays and Red Sox. McClanahan and Bello will face off here, and we have a 9.0 total for these two with the edge going to the visitors. I think for the most part that’s pretty much what I would expect, and it’ll just be the process of digging in and finding where the key bats will be at.

Rays 5 star plays – Arozarena/Franco
Rays 4 star plays – Lowe/Lowe, Diaz
GPP note – Good spot for the lefties as Bello is allowing plenty of good contact and power to them, but don’t neglect some of the righties here who are hitting right-handed pitching quite well.

Red Sox 4 star plays – Devers, Turner
Red Sox 3.5 star plays
– Yoshida, Wong
GPP note
– Not a great spot for these bats, though McClanahan is allowing modest power to righties.

Main slate

Kansas City Royals at Miami Marlins

Switching over to the main slate, we’ll start with my Royals and the Marlins. Hernandez/Mayers will take on Garrett, along with an 8.5 total. I think both sides of this pitching matchup (sans Hernandez) are interesting, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them racking up a chunk of fantasy points today. If not, there are plenty of mid-ranged and budget bats on both sides that can make some noise instead, so there’s something for everyone here!

Royals 4 star plays – Perez/Witt
Royals 3.5 star plays – Pasquantino, Olivares
GPP note – Garrett boasts plenty of strikeout upside but is also allowing some decent contact and power to righties, so you can either run a few small contrarian stacks here or attempt to hedge some.

Marlins 4 star plays – Sanchez/Soler/Arraez
Marlins 3.5 star plays
– De La Cruz
GPP note
– Mayers has been holding his own quite well, and is sort of a cheaper version of Garrett on paper, so I would approach this side the same.

Detroit Tigers at Philadelphia Phillies

Next up we have the Tigers and Phillies, with Wentz and Nola on the mound. Vegas gives this one an 8.5 total with the home team being favored heavily, which is hard to argue with. Nola will make for a good all-purpose starter today, though it’s hard to say a lot of great things about Wentz except that he is nice and cheap.

Tigers 4 star plays – McKinstry
Tigers 3.5 star plays – Baez, Baddoo
GPP note – Not the best matchup against Nola, though he is having some reverse splits issues (he’s allowing much more power to righties than to lefties over the past month or so).

Phillies 5 star plays – Harper
Phillies 4 star plays
– Castellanos/Turner/Realmuto, Schwarber
GPP note
– Wentz is allowing good xwOBA to both sides of the plate and a good chunk of power to righties, so you can go after him from either side of the plate here.

Oakland Athletics at Pittsburgh Pirates

Moving right along, our next matchup is between the Athletics and Pirates. Sears and Oviedo will get the start here, and with them, another 8.5 total. From a Vegas perspective, this one is a bit of a repeat of the previous game, though this time we have a pitcher with the best salary-to-implied total ratio on the day in Oviedo. If you aren’t taking shots with Mayers for a budget arm, perhaps he’ll be your guy instead.

Athletics 4 star plays – Brown
Athletics 3.5 star plays – Noda
GPP note – These bats are, well, these bats, but Oviedo is allowing good contact and power equally to both sides of the plate, so some exposure here isn’t a terrible idea.

Pirates 4 star plays – McCutchen/Reynolds
Pirates 3.5 star plays
– Santana/Hayes, Joe
GPP note
– Sears is also allowing good xwOBA to both sides of the plate and above-average power to righties (though almost none to lefties).

DFS MLB Weather Picks

Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

Houston Astros at Toronto Blue Jays

We get a couple of heavy hitters next as the Astros will take on the Blue Jays. Bielak and Manoah get the start here, and we get a slate-high implied total at 10.5. That also means these two will garner plenty of ownership, so be sure to give some thought to that as you are loading up stacks here (give those budget bats a look and consider wrap-around stacks or other less-common approaches).

Astros 5 star plays – Alvarez
Astros 4 star plays – Altuve/Bregman, Tucker/Pena
GPP note – Manoah is allowing good contact and power to righties and much more to lefties, so you can shuffle in some righties to go with Alvarez.

Blue Jays 5 star plays – Guerrero/Springer
Blue Jays 4 star plays
– Bichette/Merrifield/Chapman/Varsho
GPP note
– Same as above except that Manoah is allowing more power to righties currently, so you can load up on some juicy righties with confidence.

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds

Teheran and the Brewers will take on Abbott and the Reds next, and we get a healthy 9.5 total for this game. If you don’t know much about Abbott, he is Cincinnati’s top prospect and he’s a mere $4k on DraftKings. In my book, that’s enough reason to take some shots with him in tournaments.

Brewers 4.5 star plays – Contreras/Yelich
Brewers 4 star plays – Anderson
GPP note – Hard to know what to except against Abbott, but a few of these bats are hitting lefties well, and you could always hedge with a new pitcher.

Reds 4.5 star plays – India/Fraley
Reds 4 star plays
– Steer, Maile
GPP note
– Teheran seems to be in a hit-or-miss spot right now, so attacking and/or hedging here seems like a good idea. Lefties have the statcast advantage against him.

St Louis Cardinals at Texas Rangers

Next up we have Wainwright and the Cardinals set to take on Perez and the Rangers. We get another 9.5 total here, with the home team being moderate favorites. A total like that is reason enough to be interested, but I can’t help but feel like this game has a better chance than most to have one (or perhaps both) of these teams going off the rails today.

Cardinals 5 star plays – Goldschmidt
Cardinals 4 star plays – Arenado/DeJong
GPP note – Perez comes in with a reduced strikeout rate and has been allowing lots of wOBA to both sides of the plate along with plenty of power to righties, so you can go after him with some big stacks here.

Rangers 5 star plays – Seager, Lowe
Rangers 4 star plays
– Semien, Jung
GPP note
– Wainwright also enters this game with a low strikeout rate, and has been getting beat around by lefties quite a bit. He’s also allowing some power to righties, so you can go at him from either side here.

Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres

We’ll wrap up the day with the Cubs and Padres, as Hendricks and Snell will square off. An 8.5 total, the home team is once again favored here (not a single visitor is favored on the main slate today, if you hadn’t noticed), though it does feel a bit closer than one would expect considering the names on either side of this one. Baseball is funny, huh?

Cubs 5 star plays – none
Cubs 3.5 star plays – Suzuki/Happ/Swanson, Hoerner
GPP note – It’s not a great spot against Snell as he has been steadily improving, but has allowed the occasion power to lefties, so you can always try a contrarian pivot from here.

Padres 5 star plays – Soto
Padres 4 star plays
– Tatis/Machado, Bogaerts
GPP note
– Hendricks has yet to allow a home run in his return, but is allowing .380+ xwOBA to both sides of the plate, so it’s only a matter of time.

And that’s going to do it for this one.  Thanks for joining me, and be sure to check out the coach’s notes page to see who they are most interested in.  Best of luck today!
