My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers

I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the  MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.

  • Yusei Kikuchi
  • Zac Gallen
  • Shane McClanahan

We have a BRAND NEW update to our MLB Domination Station lineup optimizer with advanced user-controlled scoring systems inside.  You control how the lineups are built from three main uses of our projections: Points-based, DFSA Grades, or the unique blend of Hybrid Scoring!  The Domination Station will help you create 150 of the highest projected lineups in a matter of minutes. Minnesota Twins (-130) @ Houston Astros

Pitchers:

Twins – Joe Ryan

Astros – Brandon Bielak

Rundown:

This game opened with a total of 8. Monday’s game was an enjoyable but frustrating one as a Twins fan. I like the match-up today but the Astros always offer a dangerous spot. Ryan struck out 10 the first time he faced them but that was in April, when the Astros didn’t look like the Astros. Bielak can surprise and the Twins offer him some K upside but he does allow plenty of baserunners. The Twins got a little boost with Royce Lewis’ return and I am hoping he makes it through the season unscathed.

MIN 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Carlos Correa, Royce Lewis

GPP Note: Team ISO of .184 against RHPs.

HOU 5-star plays: Yordan Alvarez

4-star plays: Jose Altuve

GPP Note: Team ISO of .133 against RHPs.

San Diego Padres @ Miami Marlins (-140)

Pitchers:

Padres – Ryan Weathers

Marlins – Sandy Alcantara

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Soler has more HRs than strikeouts against LHPs this season. That’s saying quite a bit for a guy who strikes out plenty. He has an ISO of .630 against LHPs so far this season and 9 of the team’s 15 HRs against them. Yeah, it’s safe to say that I love me some Soler action. Alcantara hasn’t been elite this season but Vegas keeps implying that he is. The Padres have been disappointing so maybe he can turn back the clock a bit and showcase his Cy Young ability.

SD 5-star plays: Juan Soto

4-star plays: Trent Grisham

GPP Note: Team ISO of .156 against RHPs.

MIA 5-star plays: Jorge Soler

4-star plays: Garrett Cooper

GPP Note: Team ISO of .163 against LHPs.

Texas Rangers (-130) @ Detroit Tigers

Pitchers:

Rangers – Martin Perez

Tigers – Alex Faedo

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I am definitely going to keep playing the Rangers as they are leading baseball in runs per game at this point. Faedo has been a bit of a surprise overall and while I do expect some regression, I believe he was a 1st rounder or fringe 1st round draft pick. He is coming off of a career high 10 K game so we should see some regression in that department. Perez is solid enough and now he faces a weak DET squad. I don’t want to get too heavy on him but he’s definitely somebody we want exposure to.

TEX 5-star plays: Corey Seager

4-star plays: Leody Taveras, Josh Jung

GPP Note: Team ISO of .184 against RHPs.

DET 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Eric Haase, Zack Short

GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against LHPs.

Cleveland Guardians @ Baltimore Orioles (-145)

Pitchers:

Guardians – Cal Quantrill

Orioles – Kyle Gibson

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. I probably should be more interested in the pitchers than I currently am. The Guardians’ offense swings a wet pool noodle while the Orioles just lost Cedric Mullins to a groin injury. The more I look at Kyle Gibson the more I really need to make sure I get exposure. I hate the idea of chasing his last two starts but he looks good right now and gets such a great match-up. I always stack the Orioles but I will go lighter on them tonight.

CLE 5-star plays: Jose Ramirez

4-star plays: Will Brennan

GPP Note: Team ISO of .112 against RHPs.

BAL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Austin Hays, Anthony Santander

GPP Note: Team ISO of .165 against RHPs.

DFS MLB Weather Picks

Tampa Bay Rays (-196) @ Chicago Cubs

Pitchers:

Rays – Shane McClanahan

Cubs – Kyle Hendricks

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. My dude Shane McClanahan should absolutely dominate here. I know the Cubs can be pesky against LHPs but the lineup is going through some struggles and he’s just so damn good. If the wind would be blowing in, I’d be in love. The Rays have 8 guys with 6+ HRs against RHPs this season. Things do not bode well for Hendricks in this one as he struggled with command in his 2023 debut.

TB 5-star plays: Josh Lowe

4-star plays: Yandy Diaz, Wander Franco

GPP Note: Team ISO of .212 against RHPs.

CHC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Patrick Wisdom

GPP Note: Team ISO of .180 against LHPs.

Washington Nationals @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-323)

Pitchers:

Nationals – Jake Irvin

Dodgers – Tony Gonsolin

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. Gonsolin feels like a pretty damn safe option tonight. The Dodgers are always a great option and should be stacked, basically, nightly this season. Freeman just keeps on hitting while JD Martinez has been rolling over the last 10 days or so. All the Dodgers need to do is get Mookie going while getting Muncy healthy and you get an offense that can destroy just about any pitching staff.

WSH 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Corey Dickerson, Lane Thomas

GPP Note: Team ISO of .114 against RHPs.

LAD 5-star plays: Freddie Freeman

4-star plays: JD Martinez, Will Smith

GPP Note: Team ISO of .209 against RHPs.

New York Yankees @ Seattle Mariners (-140)

Pitchers:

Yankees – Nestor Cortes

Mariners – Logan Gilbert

Rundown:

This game opened with a total of 7.5. Judge has an ISO of .425 against RHPs this season. That number is pretty damn insane and he’s been rolling since his return from the IL. Rizzo has taken Gilbert deep but he may not be in the lineup after hurting his neck/shoulder in a collision with Tatis Jr. Speaking of rolling, Julio has turned the corner and has been getting it done at the plate for the Mariners after a horribly slow start.

NYY 5-star plays: Aaron Judge

4-star plays: Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres

GPP Note: Team ISO of .186 against RHPs.

SEA 5-star plays: Julio Rodriguez

4-star plays: Teoscar Hernandez

GPP Note: Team ISO of just .160 against LHPs.

Philadelphia Phillies @ New York Mets (-135)

Pitchers:

Phillies- Ranger Suarez

Mets – Kodai Senga

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. This is a game that’s really tough for me to figure out. Senga can look like an absolute stud (vs TB) or he can look like he doesn’t belong (vs CHC) and ironically those two starts are his last 2. I think there’s a route to a strong game but also a route to getting blown away. Suarez is one of those guys that I always want to play but then talk myself out of it as the day progresses. At this point, I need to play the wait and see game with him to see if he returns to his end of 2021 form.

PHI 5-star plays: Bryce Harper

4-star plays: Nick Castellanos, Alec Bohm

GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against RHPs.

NYM 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Pete Alonso, Francisco Alvarez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against LHPs.

Atlanta Braves (-270) @ Oakland Athletics

Pitchers:

Braves – Bryce Elder

A’s – JP Sears

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Sears is giving up about 2 HR/9 on the season and the Braves are absolutely destroying LHPs so far. I wanted to be on Sears as a sneaky option but I just don’t think I can do it, despite him throwing the ball well of late. The Oakland lineup is rocking an ISO of .088 over the last week and Elder has thrown the ball extremely well. Feels like a pretty good spot to be all about ATL this evening.

ATL 5-star plays: Ronald Acuna, Orlando Arcia

4-star plays: Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies

GPP Note: Team ISO of .257 against LHPs.

OAK 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ryan Noda

GPP Note: Team ISO of .132 against RHPs.

Kansas City Royals @ St Louis Cardinals (-190)

Pitchers:

Royals – Zack Greinke

Cardinals – Miles Mikolas

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. The Cardinals are on the struggle bus again so I can only imagine how the fan base jumps off after Greinke pulls out the W tonight. Mikolas has been atrocious at home so far this season and I think we see plenty of runs in this one. The Cardinals have a couple of guys who have hit Greinke decently in their careers but where’s the desire from them to get things done?

KC 5-star plays: Bobby Witt

4-star plays: Michael Massey, MJ Melendez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .153 against RHPs.

STL 5-star plays: Paul Goldschmidt

4-star plays: Willson Contreras

GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs.

Cincinnati Reds @ Boston Red Sox (-179)

Pitchers:

Reds – Ben Lively

Red Sox – Brayan Bello

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 10. The Reds come into this game really rolling at the plate. They have a team OPS of .929 over the last week with 6 guys rocking an OPS of 1.000+. Bello hasn’t been as good at home and the total for this one is sky high. I think Bello is an interesting GPP dart at SP because he has the upside we covet but I just don’t know about this one. Lively has been overachieving by a ton but he gets the Red Sox during some struggles. I can’t go there but maybe the BOS run total is a bit too high.

CIN 5-star plays: Matt McLain

4-star plays: Spencer Steer, TJ Friedl

GPP Note: Team ISO of .131 against RHPs.

BOS 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Triston Casas, Connor Wong

GPP Note: Team ISO of .172 against RHPs.

MLB DFS Winning Lineups $50,000

Milwaukee Brewers @ Toronto Blue Jays (-164)

Pitchers:

Brewers – Adrian Houser

Blue Jays – Yusei Kikuchi

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Oh man, we get Kikuchi against the punch-less Brewers offense. Which side is going to win the battle? If you have been reading/watching my content this season you know that I am on the Kikuchi side. I keep taking the LHP against this MIL lineup. The MIL team total is stronger than I would have thought but that’s probably because Kikuchi hasn’t been sharp the last couple of weeks.

MIL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Owen Miller

GPP Note: Team ISO of .129 against RHPs.

TOR 5-star plays: Bo Bichette

4-star plays: George Springer, Kevin Kiermaier

GPP Note: Team ISO of .166 against RHPs.

Pittsburgh Pirates @ San Francisco Giants (-145)

Pitchers:

Pirates – Johan Oviedo

Giants – John Brebbia/Sean Manaea

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. It might be a Manaea kind of night and that made me throw up a little bit in my mouth. The Pirates aren’t swinging it the greatest, at least the RHBs aren’t. Manaea is coming off of some strong performances of late so there’s a route to a pretty solid return tonight. Oviedo has shown flashes this season but he really needs to avoid getting smacked by LHBs and the Giants are going to throw plenty of them out there.

PIT 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Connor Joe

GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 against LHPs.

SF 5-star plays: Michael Conforto

4-star plays: Patrick Bailey, Brandon Crawford

GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against RHPs.

Colorado Rockies @ Arizona Diamondbacks (-240)

Pitchers:

Rockies – Kyle Freeland

D’Backs – Zac Gallen

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. McMahon has an OPS of 1.639 over the last week so he’s the main worry when it comes to my love of Zac Gallen tonight. Let’s be honest though, I love Zac Gallen every damn night that he allows me to. The annoying part is that the Rockies are about as hot as they have been at any point this season (not like they are blazing hot or anything).  Freeland has given up just 1 HR over his last 5 starts. That changes tonight as the D’Backs tag him for 3!

COL 5-star plays: Ryan McMahon

4-star plays: Randal Grichuk

GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 against RHPs.

ARI 5-star plays: Ketel Marte

4-star plays: Lourdes Gurriel, Evan Longoria

GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 against LHPs.

Los Angeles Angels @ Chicago White Sox (-145)

Pitchers:

Angels – Tyler Anderson

White Sox – Lucas Giolito

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Anderson has settled in and been serviceable in May but he isn’t picking up many strikeouts. Giolito has been feast or famine and it’s his upside that draws us in. The Angels can strike out a ton (see yesterday) but they can also hit HRs (see yesterday). I wanted to be on the White Sox a bit but the more I look at things, the more I just want to avoid them. That doesn’t mean I am considering Anderson though.

LAA 5-star plays: Mike Trout

4-star plays: Shohei Ohtani, Matt Thaiss

GPP Note: Team ISO of .166 against RHPs.

CWS 5-star plays: Andrew Vaughn

4-star plays: Romy Gonzalez, Luis Robert

GPP Note: Team ISO of .164 against LHPs.
