Colonial, located in Fort Worth, Texas, is a classic Perry Maxwell design and home to golf legend Ben Hogan. The course has hosted an event since 1946, making it the longest running host on the PGA Tour! Let’s unpack what we can expect from the tournament and how it might shape our DFS strategy.
The Course:
The Colonial Country Club, famously known as “Hogan’s Alley,” presents an exciting challenge for the golfers competing in the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge. This par-70 course stretches out over 7,209 yards, marked by its narrow fairways, small greens, and emphasis on precision and shot-making.
The layout includes three Par 3s, three Par 5s, and 12 Par 4s, which demands a fine balance between power and finesse. Weather conditions, particularly the wind, can play a significant role here, and players’ adaptability to these factors will often make or break their rounds.
Historical Design
Colonial Country Club holds an illustrious place in golfing history. Designed by Perry Maxwell and John Bredemus in 1936, it has been the host of the Charles Schwab Challenge since 1946, making it the longest-running non-major PGA Tour event held at the same venue.
This course is steeped in tradition and has maintained much of its original design throughout the years. The renowned hole 5, also known as the “Horrible Horseshoe,” remains a test of a player’s fortitude and strategy. This stretch of holes (3, 4, and 5) are often considered the toughest trio on the PGA Tour.

Important Statistics
At Colonial, specific statistics stand out as crucial to success:

- Strokes Gained: Approach – With small greens, a premium is put on precise approach shots. Players who excel in this statistic tend to perform well at Colonial.
- Driving Accuracy – The narrow fairways require players to be accurate off the tee. While distance can be advantageous, keeping the ball in play is often more critical. That being said we’ve seen lots of long hitters have success here, as they’ve been forced to club down and find fairways. Tony Finau being the most significant one that comes to mind.
- Par 4 Scoring – Given the 12 par 4s on the course, players who score well on these holes typically have a good week.
- Scrambling – Due to the challenging nature of the greens, players will miss greens in regulation, making scrambling a key statistic.
