NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 10/18/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Pretty big slate with some interesting matchups. Other than the 2 stacks that I bring up here, I like the shootout potential of the Blue Jackets vs the Canucks game, as well as the Ducks vs Devils game. Jack Hughes and Johnny Gaudreau are 2 players that are going to break out at some point for their respective teams; and when they do, they will be low-owned, and at a moderate price. I also have a sneaky feeling that Zach Werenski is the cheapest he will be all season, and that a monster game is coming. The Nashville Predators catching the Kings on the second day of their back to back, in Nashville is an interesting spot as well that shouldn’t garner too much ownership. Whoever Edmonton decides is going to stop pucks for them tomorrow night will be the chalky goalie of the slate for cash games; they are at home against the Sabres. Which brings me to my first stack.

Correlated Snipe #1

Connor McDavid – Zach Hyman

McDavid and Hyman play on the same top line, and top powerplay unit. McDavid has been on record saying that he wants to score more goals this season, and he started with a hat trick on the Oilers opening night. Buffalo’s starting goalie is typically Craig Anderson, who is like 40 years old, and will be up against the highest flying offense in the NHL on the road. Draisaitl is also in play for mega-stacks. I am keeping this as simple as possible here. Eat this chalk and figure the rest out.

Correlated Snipe #2

Jonathan Huberdeau – Tyler Toffoli – Elias Lindholm

Calgary at home is always an interesting spot. The Vegas Golden Knights have played well to start, but the law of averages is about to catch up to Mr Logan Thompson I believe. Thompson may end up being a solid NHL goaltender, but he will not maintain a 940 save percentage on the year. Vegas plays an up and down game, and Calgary is starting to get use to each other. It’s not often that one team makes multiple major changes in one offseason, but the Flames did; and some would say that the Flames may be better off for it. The Lindholm line is going to start exploding at some point, and when it does, I am going to be on top of it.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Gustav Nyquist – Top line with Johnny Gaudreau, tope powerplay unit, top penalty killer. The Blue Jackets love them some Gus Nyquist.

Grinder #2

Dawson Mercer – Jack Hughes’ line-mate that is averaging over 5 shots per game to start the season.

Grinder #3

Mat Barzal – Still way too cheap; now is the time to buy shares on DraftKings. The Sharks are bad, Barzal is shooting pucks and has 3 assists in 2 games; the ceiling is also there.
