NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 10/13/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Big slate of games with a ton of studs as well as cheap opportunities to get them. My 2 stacks today are going to consist of 1 obvious chalkier one, as well as a more contrarian one.  Other spots I like that I will not be writing about are the Kings, the Golden Knights, and the Flames; all 3 have strong teams with high top-end skill, and are catching all three of their opponents on the second leg of back to backs. There are so many ways to go tonight and with player salaries normalizing, we have to nail these decisions. Tristian Jarry will be the chalkiest goalie of the slate, as the Penguins slot in to play the Coyotes.

Correlated Snipe #1

Sidney Crosby – Jake Guentzel – Rikard Rakell

Yep, the Penguins play the Coyotes in their season and home opener, which is an easy way to cruise into their season. Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel have played together for what seems like a decade, and Rakell is a nice player that they traded for and extended at the trade deadline that they want to get going in a big way. This is not a hot take that the Penguins are good and that the Coyotes are bad. The Crosby line should be fairly easy to roster and should be a core build in single entries, as well as cash games. We will learn as we go to start this season, but Crosby to Guentzel has been an NHL staple for quite a while now.

Correlated Snipe #2

Tage Thompson – Jeff Skinner – Victor Olofsson

3 guys that can score goals, against a team that has a trash defense; gimme, gimme. There is a lot of hype surrounding the Ottawa Senators, and rightfully so, given their high flying offense. With that being said, Ottawa’s defense is straight up abysmal, and I don’t fully trust Anton Forsberg yet. Tage Thompson put up 40 goals last year, Jeff Skinner has scored goals at a high rate his entire career, and Olofsson can also snipe it. Buffalo in their home opener is a super sneaky and affordable stack tonight, which will allow you to grab some studs.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Mat Barzal – Not the cheapest, but he is way too cheap for what he provides to his team; and also, he just signed a monster 8 year contract.

Grinder #2

Mark Stone – Way too cheap for what he brings. Simple as that.

Grinder #3

Erik Brannstrom – The Senators defense does suck in general, but Brannstrom, may not suck. Good analysis? This offensive-minded defenseman is very gifted at moving the puck, and the Senators will without a doubt rely on his growth in order for them to succeed.
