MLB DFS Top Pitcher Breakdown Strategy | Fanduel and DraftKings Tuesday September 20th, 2022 MAIN SLATE

Big Tuesday night slate here! I will continue to break down my favorite pitchers on the MAIN slate tonight!

MLB DFS pitching breakdowns are key to starting a winning lineup. Finding the best matchups form the foundation to a cash game lineup, and the sneaky matchups exploiting deeper dives find those under-the-radar pitchers capable of winning huge tournament money.  But, knowing which pitcher is best suited for which DFS game format sets you apart from the rest of the casual, fishy players out there just lighting their money on fire nightly.

Our MLB pitching guru, MDell (Matt), walks you through the strategy and metrics for today’s slate.  For an even deeper dive into timeless MLB Pitching Strategy, click here.  And, for proper definitions of the many stats used below, head to Fangraphs.com.  They are easy to find and learn.

Dylan Cease vs CLE

Tougher matchup for the White Sox and Cease tonight against Cleveland, a team that doesn’t strike out a ton against RHP. Actually, in the last 2 weeks they have the lowest strikeout rate against righties, but they aren’t hitting all that amazing against them. Cease has been great for Chicago this season and is allowing just a .184 batting average against at home and already has 3 great starts in September. On the year against the Guardians, he has 3 starts, throwing 17 innings and allowing just 4 ER with 16 K’s. I do like his upside here to go deeper into this game though. ALL FORMATS

Luis Castillo @ OAK

Great matchup for Castillo here tonight and he’s still priced under 10k on both sites tonight. Oakland comes into this game striking out 33% against RHP in the last 2 weeks and hitting only .200 as a team. Castillo has rolled off some really good starts since being traded and really has been solid all season. His last bad start was in this same scenario though, but I am not overly concerned with that one as he’s rolled off 4 straight good starts after that one. He’s too cheap on both sites here tonight. ALL FORMATS

Nestor Cortes Jr. vs PIT

Just like our Castillo matchup with OAK, the Pirates come into this game struggling against LHP. They have a 32.5% strikeout rate in the last 2 weeks against lefties and Cortes does have strikeout stuff. He was a bit better in his last start against Boston, striking out 7 over 5 innings in his 2nd start back from the IL. I think he is good to go now and the Yankees have a really good matchup here where he should contend for the win and quality start. ALL FORMATS

Charlie Morton vs WSH

Washington isn’t striking out much against RHP in the last  couple of weeks, but the last time Morton faced Washington he tossed 7 innings with 7 K’s. Morton has been kind of up and down all season for the Braves, but he still has tremendous upside for them. 5 of his last 8 starts he has managed to throw 6+ innings despite allowing 4 ER in his last 2 starts. Though Washington isn’t striking out a lot against righties, I don’t think their offense is really that good. GPP

Carlos Carrasco @ MIL

Carrasco has struggled a bit more on the road this year for the Mets, but he is coming off 2 great starts, granted against PIT and MIA who are 2 of the worst teams in the National League this year. This matchup is a bit tougher against the Brewers though but they are still striking out a decent amount against RHP at 23.8%. He needs to keep his pitch count low to go deep into this game as MIL has an 11% walk rate in that span against RHP. Coming off an 11 K performance against the Pirates, Carrasco will look to keep it rolling. GPP

Patrick Sandoval @ TEX

Decent ballpark to throw in tonight and TEX comes into this game with almost a 27% strikeout rate against LHP in the last 2 weeks. They have faced a lot of lefties in that span too with 223 PA (most in baseball in the last 2 weeks). Sandoval isn’t really a huge strikeout guy, but is just under a K per inning on the road this year and managed to strike out 6 Rangers in 5.2 innings when he faced them last. If he can get around lefty hitters like Seager and Lowe, I do think he could have a decent outing here tonight. GPP

Kyle Freeland vs SFG

I know, I know, I know a starter in Coors boohoo. I like the way that he’s thrown the ball over his last 2 starts one of which was in Coors. Freeland has allowed just 1 ER in his last 2 starts spanning 12.2 innings with 13 strikeouts. He did struggle in his last start against the Giants, but was still able to throw 6.1 innings, but did allow 5 ER in the game against them. The way the Giants are hitting lately though, I think Freeland can shut them down even in Coors here tonight. GPP

Joey Wentz @ BAL

Wentz isn’t really a big name here, but he does have a good matchup against Baltimore. Usually, Baltimore does well against LHP but of late, they have really been struggling against lefties. They come into this game with a 29.2% strikeout rate against letting and are batting just .167 with an ISO of .121. Wentz was able to slow down the Astros hot offense last time he started but managed just 4 innings because of a high pitch count. Baltimore isn’t Houston so I do think he will be able to go a little deeper into this game because they aren’t walking much to LHP either (4.2%). Wentz has allowed just 2 ER in his last 3 outings after a tough MLB Debut. GPP

DINGER OF THE DAY

Aaron Judge

I was going to go with Austin Riley here, he’s my 2nd option for dinger of the day. Not sure who is starting for the Pirates yet though, but Judge I think will look to break Maris’ record at home this week and he’s only 3 away from breaking the record.
