On Tuesday, the NFL suspended the Miami Dolphins owner, Stephen Ross, from team-rated activities and operations. This comes after former Miami head coach, Brian Flores, filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL. Ross’s suspension will last through October 17th, 2022. In addition to his temporary ban, Ross was also fined $1.5 million.
While Ross received punishment, so did his organization and Vice Chairmen, Bruce Beal. The Dolphins have to forfeit their 1st-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft and a 3rd-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Beal was fined $500,000 and cannot attend any league meetings for the remainder of the 2022 season.

These suspensions all stem from Flores’ civil suit, which prompted an NFL investigation into alleged “tanking” and tampering with players and coaches not apart of the Miami organization. Based on the NFL’s findings, the Dolphins did not intentionally lose games in order to gain a better draft position in the 2022 NFL draft.

While the team did not “tank,” they were in direct violation of the league’s tampering rules during 2019 and again in 2022. Tom Brady, while with New England and Tampa Bay, was a player connected to the NFL’s investigation. The other person involved was Sean Payton while he was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
Owner Stephen Ross did not take long to release his official statement.

Oddly enough, Ross’ suspension ends the same day that Dashaun Watson’s ends. Watson will be serving a six-game suspension as a result of 30 different women accusing him of sexual misconduct.
