NFL Fantasy Football – Early 2022 Mock Draft – Redraft

DFS Army’s Gthom breaks down an early 2022 mock draft. This mock draft was a live draft for a 12-team, single-QB, PPR redraft league.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (9) runs out of the pocket in the fourth quarter during a Week 16 NFL game against the Baltimore Ravens, Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021, at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Baltimore Ravens, 41-21.

1.07 – Derrick Henry (RB) Tennessee Titans

Potential Picks – Dalvin Cook and Devante Adams

With my first pick I really like to lock down a bona fide stud that I can rely on every single week. Henry fits that bill in this mock draft. I also have him ranked as the RB2. Here I was able to get him as the RB5. Value in your first pick is always special, usually you have to pay-up not buy-low.

2.06 – Travis Kelce (TE) Kansas City Chiefs

Potential Picks – Stefon Diggs and Tyreek Hill

From here you could go multiple directions in this mock draft. I chose to lock down my tight end position because having someone like Kelce creates H2H leverage at the tight end position nearly every single week. The KC tight end finished as the TE1 overall five consecutive years until Mark Andrews dethroned him in 2021. Diggs is excellent too but I see minimal outcomes where he finishes number-one at his position; Kelce is the odds-on favorite to be TE1. As for Hill, he carried more risk than I wanted for my appetite at 2.06.

3.07 – Antonio Gibson (RB) Washington Commanders

Potential Picks – A.J. Brown and Keenan Allen

I love how Gibson finished out the season in 2021; in weeks 10 – 18 he was the RB6 overall for PPR and averaged 16.7-FPPG. I am excited to take Gibson in this mock draft, which solidifies my RB2 spot. Brown looked very tempting at this spot, but taking him as my WR1 felt like it could be stressful. If you have owned Brown on your fantasy team before, you know he pops up on the injury report nearly every week. I am also bearish on Brown’s move to Philly. For Allen, he is a great WR2 for any fantasy team but he brings little-to-no upside and he would have been drafted as my WR1. I need upside and floor with my WR1 pick.

4.06 – Diontae Johnson (WR) Pittsburgh Steelers

Potential Picks – J.K. Dobbins and DJ Moore

At this spot in the mock draft I had to get a solid PPR receiver because I had none. Johnson is the man for the job. You may be worried about the quarterback issues in Pittsburgh but luckily we have a history of Mitchell Trubisky hyper targeting his receivers. Dobbins is the more desired player but I felt he could fall to me in the fifth round, Johnson would not have fallen. Moore was the other receiver I considered on the clock. While Moore has huge talent, his team’s quarterback woes seem disastrous and Moore does not score enough to mask their quarterback deficiency.

5.07 – A.J. Dillon (RB) Green Bay Packers

Potential Picks – Travis Etienne Jr. and Michael Thomas

Here I want the best flex player on the board for this mock draft. The remaining receivers seemed talented enough for me to consider a RB3 instead of a WR2. Dillon’s role is secured and has upside, plus his offense could rely further on his youth and talent. He is always one-snap away from being the main back for Green Bay also. Etienne’s usage is still a mystery, though we know he will be the RB1 for Jacksonville. I was heavily tempted to go Etienne here and I have no issues with nabbing him over Dillon, if you feel so inclined. Thomas was also available and feels like an easy breakout candidate. However, I have my doubts and the other two players at this spot seemed more secure to bring weekly value.

6.06 – Jerry Jeudy (WR) Denver Broncos

Potential Picks – Courtland Sutton and Elijah Moore

My current roster for this mock draft is RB (3), WR (1), TE (1), and I desperately need to back-fill my receiver position. A player with a floor/ceiling combo would be an elite grab for my team and I am looking to draft Sutton or Jeudy. I really felt that Sutton and Jeudy would be gone before my next pick and I chose to select Jeudy. Sutton is fine if you prefer him instead. Elijah Moore was considered here as well. Moore has the same role as Jeudy and Sutton, but on a less superior team.

7.07 – Allen Robinson (WR) Los Angeles Rams

Potential Picks – Elijah Moore, Kareem Hunt, Kyler Murray

With my roster balanced a little further, I am interested in the best FLEX player on the board. I am high on Robinson, you can see my write up of him on my Best Ball Value Targets (WR Edition). This WR2 role for LA is a great value edition in the seventh round of redraft. Allen’s role provides WR1 upside every week. Moore felt riskier than Robinson. Kareem Hunt is a solid fantasy player but he felt like a slight reach. Kyler Murray was still on the board, six quarterbacks were drafted ahead of him at this point, but I normally like to wait until the double-digit rounds to consider quarterback. Robinson gets the nod at this pick. I honestly just love his price tag and role.

8.06 – DeVonta Smith (WR) Philadelphia Eagles

Potential Picks – Chase Edmonds and Brandon Aiyuk

My roster is fully balanced at this point and I am looking to take the best players left on the board. The most attractive are Smith, Edmonds and Aiyuk. Edmonds is stuck in a weird backfield that seems very hard to project. Aiyuk seems promising but I believe Deebo Samuel will be returning. Aiyuk’s value is also tied to a run-first quarterback, so I feel Smith is the pick. I like Smith the most because he does have some upside if the Eagles successfully throw the ball in 2022. I would be extremely happy with this pick if he becomes a Tyler Lockett-lite (huge fantasy weeks with big let downs as well).

9.07 – Joe Burrow (QB) Cincinnati Bengals

Potential Picks – Melvin Gordon III and Robert Woods

Approaching double-digit rounds my fantasy squad should be nearly formed. From here I like to secure my quarterback position if the value is there. My plan was to wait for Trey Lance to fall, but low and behold we have Joe Burrow coming off the board as QB12. I have him ranked as QB6 in my rankings. In single-QB leagues, draft quarterbacks late because a lot of the time you can grab an elite option in these later rounds. Burrow brings extreme value because he could finish top-two at his position this season. Melvin Gordon and Robert Woods were my other considered selections. Both would be low-end depth pieces compared to the need Burrow fills.

10.06 – Melvin Gordon III (RB) Denver Broncos

Potential Picks – Robert Woods and Russell Gage

Gordon is far away from being “sexy” at this point but he certainly has value at this spot. Last season he split carries 50/50 with Javonte Williams and in 2022, there will continue to be a timeshare in Denver. While many predict Williams to be the RB1 for this offense, I have him as the RB1-A and Gordon as the RB1-B. If that comes to fruition, you have a streamable fantasy piece in Gordon. Woods and Gage were also considered here but I really needed to secure my fourth running back at this point.

11.07 – Robert Woods (WR) Tennessee Titans

Potential Picks – Devante Parker

I cannot stress this enough, if you can get a WR1 for any NFL team in a double-digit round, you have found some value. While Woods is not going to set the world on fire, there are limited veteran pass catchers for this Titans team. Even with their heavy investment in Treylon Burks, Woods will provide PPR value.

12.06 – Marquez Valdes-Scantling (WR) Kansas City Chiefs

Potential Picks – Rondale Moore and Kenny Golladay

For my last three positional picks I really want to take calculated dart-throws. These picks have a high chance of being cut from your team anyway so aim high at least. MVS is a great dart-throw player. We have no idea how the vertical passing game will flow in Kansas City now that Tyreek Hill is gone. JuJu Smith-Schuster was signed but he is not a vertical threat like MVS. I love the MVS pick here because he could be a flex-worthy, boom-or-bust, fantasy player. Moore feels gross to select due to the Marquise Brown trade. Once Hopkins returns, Moore could easily be relegated in his role. Kenny Golladay is a piece of the Giants’ passing attack, a unit I want no part of.

13.07 – Gus Edwards (RB) Baltimore Ravens

Potential Picks – Rondale Moore

Edwards, here, could provide some flex value in his timeshare with Dobbins. While Edwards is an early down back, the Ravens will likely return to their 55-percent run rate in 2022 which can boost Edwards a little further than this 13.06 pick. He will never become a clear-cut, featured, running back… even if Dobbins were to sustain an injury. Best case scenario is he locks down goal-to-go situations. Rondale Moore seems to have low value here as well.

14.06 – Justin Fields (QB) Chicago Bears

Potential Picks – Tua Tagovailoa and Rondale Moore

While exiting your draft with the final picks, upside is key. Justin Fields may not bring great upside to an NFL game, but for fantasy he certainly could. Running quarterbacks are a cheat code and since I failed to select Trey Lance I will clog my bench and see what I have in Fields. If he utilizes his legs and is marginally successful in the pocket, he could finish in the top-12 at his position. Tagovailoa is another player who should breakout, although not everyone believes in that outlook.
