NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 4/21/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

Incredibly massive slate tonight with tons of ways to go; Some high upside stacks I like that I will not be writing up officially are the The Montreal Canadiens with Suzuki and Caufield; as well as, the Florida Panthers including Huberdeau and Giroux. If you aren’t playing my primary stack tonight, then you might as well take the opposing goalie, who is cheap and has high upside. The Panthers have not been shut out all year and Huberdeau wants the Art Ross trophy, and black and yellow game is happening tonight as well.

Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1

Anze Kopitar – Adrian Kempe – Andreas Athanaseau (AA)

The Kings are cheap, very talented, and are competing their asses off to make the playoffs in these final games of the regular season. The Blackhawks have nothing to play for, have subpar goaltending, and a bad blue-line. Kopitar is simply steady eddie beast man when it comes to his NHL career, as he has seen every scenario and situation in the book; including winning a coiple Stanley Cups. Adrian Kempe is entering the prime of his career and is shooting and scoring at a frequent rate as of late (which is obviously what we’re looking for). Then, There was AA, who has had a rollercoaster of a career thus far, but now finds himself on the top line with Kopitar and Kempe, and is in the thick of an intense playoff push. Talent has never been the issue with AA, the issue has been a whirlwind of other things; but, a guy like Anze Kopitar, can help any player figure themselves out. Sean Durzi is also a fabulous play tonight on defense.

Correlated Snipe #2

Tage Thompson – Jeff Skinner – Victor Olofsson

First of all, the Devils are missing their 2 best forwards in Hughes and Bratt, and have had nearly the worst goaltending in the NHL this entire season. Buffalo is trying to build an identity for their future, and they are surprisingly still a scrappy team; even though they should be tanking. Tage Thompson has had a tremendous year in regards to what his initial expectation was, and is in a prime spot once again tonight. Olofsson, if you have followed me over the years, is still a young player that I have been high on for a while; and is currently one of the best goal scorers on the Sabres (and is super cheap). Then we have Skinner and his infamous enormous contract that everyone hates. Yes, Skinner is overpaid, but he is still a very solid goal scorer with over 30 goals this year. If Skinner was on a decent contract, on a contending team, his entire narrative changes; there is no doubt in my mind that if he was on the Panthers, or Bruins, or Avalanche, he would be a 40-45 goal scorer. Honestly, if the Sabres eat 50% of his contract, they could get a bunch of assets for a $4.5M aav Jeff Skinner.

Hard Pass

Pens/Bruins

Playoff atmosphere type game. These 2 teams are super deep, both wear black and yellow, and are heavy defensive teams with good goaltending. The expensive guys aren’t worth what they are given the matchup; the Penguins love focusing on shutting down one line and making someone else beat them.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Nick Paul – Slated on the Lightning’s top line with Kucherov and Point; decent spot vs Leafs.

Grinder #2

Josh Anderson – slated on Montreal’s top line and powerplay unit with Caufield and Suzuki; at home vs Flyer, yummy.
