NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 4/5/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

Giant slate tonight with several ways to go; McDavid, Matthews, Josi, where do we go? There are a lot of tricky stacks that we can get creative with, but I am only going to give you one; the other one is rather straight forward, and has the one of the highest ceilings of the slate, aside from the Matthews, McDavid, and Draisaitl lines. No goalies are safe this year in the NHL, and that will not change tonight.

Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1

Mika Zibanejad – Chris Kreider – Frank Vatrano

This isn’t my first time writing up this trio of friends from the New York Rangers, and it probably won’t be the last. I will keep it simple by saying that they are very good at hockey and that Kreider and Zibanejad have been line-mates for years. Kreider, cough cough, is 3 goals away from 50 goals on the season; who, why and how? Answers; he is very straight forward and hard-nosed with his approach to attack goalies and invade their creases, and in today’s NHL, that is getting rewarded. Not to mention that the Devils have had atrocious goaltending and a shotty blue-line this entire season. Oh yeah, and the Devils embarrassed the Rangers earlier this season, so the Rangers are going to come out swinging.

Correlated Snipe #2

Sebastian Aho – Teuvo Teravainen – Seth Jarvis

The Buffalo Sabres are a scrappy team with crappy goaltending and nowhere near enough fire-power to hang with the Carolina Hurricanes (in theory). I really like the Hurricanes in this game, so why not roster their top line? If you want to get super sneaky and kind of cute and unnecessary you can play the Vincent Trocheck, Max Domi, Andrei Svechnikov line; but Aho/Teraveinen has the highest ceiling in my humble opinion. With all of the Oilers and Leafs big guns in play on this slate, Carolina becomes that high upside stack at a noticeable salary discount. Buffalo stinks and have no goalie, I’m gambling on Rod Brind’Amour’s team; they never take shifts off.

Hard Pass

The Avalanche/Penguins game

The Penguins have been scary good lately and the Avalanche are regarded as the team to beat in the NHL; so, somethings got to give, right? How about no. Bothe teams have very expensive star-power, but are against very tough defenses and very solid goalies, which makes this game unattractive to me. Expect a playoff atmosphere and rugged style in this one.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Gustav Forsling- The Panthers defensemen in general are super aggressive and with good reason; their team is fearless. Forsling is one of those guys that is stepping up with Ekblad out for the regular season. Look at his game log; Forsling is throwing pucks towards the net, isn’t afraid to block a puck, and is in a fast-paced, high-octane game.

Grinder#2

Erik Brannstrom – Brannstrom is young, super cheap, and is quarterbacking their top powerplay unit; as well as playing on the top pair with Chabot still hurt.

Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd.  😉
