NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 1/8/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

In a 10 game slate, there are tons of possibilities, and ownership should be low across the board. I say that, knowing full well that the Leaf/Avalanche game will be by far the most popular on this slate. If you go that route, then you will have to find cheap value elsewhere, which is doable; but, is that the way to go on this slate? My vote, for cash, yes; for GPP’s, no. So I will go over a couple of stacks that I like that will be decent pivots off the big Leafs game.

Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1

Mikael Granlund – Filip Forsberg – Matt Duchene

This line has been one of the most underrated and effective lines in the entire NHL this year. The main piece of this stack is the mustached wizard himself, Filip Forsberg. The guy is unbelievably talented, and is decently priced across the industry. The Predators are up against the soon to be arena-less Arizona Coyotes, who I cannot see holding the Predators to under 4 or 5 goals; and, in general, those goals are coming from the top line and powerplay unit which are these 3 beauties. you can mix and match Duchene with possibly Roman Josi, to make this stack more unique. Don’t overthink this one too much, and just attack the Coyotes.

Correlated Snipe #2

Patrik Laine – Boone Jenner – Oliver Bjorkstrand

Keep tabs with Dailyfaceoff to see if any of the Covid19 news changes in Columbus, but this may be the top line for the Blue Jackets tonight. If it is not, then this is at least 3/5 players on their top powerplay unit. Sure, I am a Blue Jackets fan, but anyone that knows me knows how critical I am of this team. They are on the second game of a home and home stand vs the Devils; and the game tonight is in Columbus. The main piece in this stack is Patrik Laine, so whomever he ends up skating with, is who I would ultimately stack him with. The Blue Jackets have sucked harder than a vacuum at a dust factory as of late, but I think the tides will change at least for one night. They don’t want to get embarrassed at home on a Saturday night against another losing team, and I don’t expect them to. They have been better at home vs on the road this year, and I expect the cannon to be busy tonight.

Hard Pass #1

The Caps/Wild game

Not much to go off of here, but the Capitals are on the second game of a back to back and are traveling a fair distance to play. The Wild aren’t a sexy team either, and I don’t think Kaprizov is going in this game either. Ovechkin may just stay drunk and asleep on the plane for this one; so, no thanks.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder#1

William Karlsson- My guy got a significant price decrease after his lousy performance last time out; and just like you should do in the stock market, I’m going to be buying low here. He is their current top center, is on their top powerplay unit, and kills penalties. Also, his hair is beautiful.

Grinder#2

Tomas Tatar- I wouldn’t think he has done anything to lose his spot on the top line and powerplay unit for the Devils, after producing at an all-star pace for the short time he has been there. The Devils top line has gotten a hike in price; but Tatar has stayed low enough to interest me. Not to mention that the Blue Jackets defense sucks, and he has torched them his entire career it seems.

Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd.  😉
