Atlanta Motor Speedway

We head back to Atlanta for the second time in 2021 for more Cup and Xfinity Series action this week. This will be the first time in about 55 years that the Cup Series will run a 400 mile race at Atlanta. I am excited for a little bit shorter 1.5 mile race. For those unfamiliar, Atlanta is the most abbrassive track on the schedule. Tire wear is massive and long run speed is ultra important. Last Cup race here saw Kyle Larson as the dominant car but he struggled on the long run which gave Ryan Blaney the race win late. Lap time fall off is between 3 tp 4 seconds per lap by the end of a green flag run. There are usually very few cautions and these races are rather straight forward with little variance. Neither series will have practice or qualifying this week.

NASCAR Cup Series DFS Outlook

Hard to expect much more than for Kyle Larson to dominate and win this race. Chase Elliott could be an early leader but I just don’t see anyone touching Larson at this point. On DK and FD I will be loading up on Larson as well as the other HMS drivers. Someone like Harvick who has a great track history could offer some viability as a place diff and top 5 finisher but I am not sure if you will get any ownership advantage there. It appears like to get some leverage you will have to attack the likes of Stenhouse and Austin Dillon. Possibly a Kurt Busch who had killer speed before having issues in race one. It will be hard to bet against any chevy teams this week.

NASCAR Xfinity Series DFS Outlook

Fully expecting the Kyle Busch show here. Starts on pole and should absolutely dominate this race. Atlanta is usually straight forward which is good for lineup making. Most people will likely attack the Berry, Ty Dillon, Sam Mayer section, and for good reason. They offer really good place diff ability and are well known names. If you are planning for Busch dominating then you will likely need to play two or three cheap value plays. To be optimal you will likely have to play drivers you are not comfortable with like Kyle Weatherman or Carson Ware. If Busch has an issue though that would really shake things up and give the opportunity for a lot of different possibilities.

Knoxville Raceway

Knoxville is arguably the best dirt race track in the world. Very excited to see a race take place there. It essentially takes the place of Eldora on the schedule. It is a half mile in length and has only 8 degrees of banking. Judging by the SRX race we just saw there which had relatively the same horsepower, this race will run more like an asphalt race than a dirt race. I expect there to be two lanes with drivers either trying to make the track as short as possible on the bottom or ripping the top hoping to keep up momentum. I expect this track to race more narrow than Eldora which could result in more accidents. A handful of drivers are comparing it to how the Bristol dirt race was run where the track essentially ended up becoming one groove and racing like a normal Bristol race. This is all speculation however and we will need to pay close attention to practice to find out more info. The heat races which will set the race order will take place just before the race so we will have a short turnaround for lineup making.

NASCAR Truck Series DFS Outlook

Incredibly short race for the Truck series this week. We saw an absolute shitshow of an event last year with half the race being run under yellow. Cautions happened on the first or second lap for three straight runs to start the race. Technically 4 if you count the stage break. It was possibly the stupidest race I have ever played and set up for a ridiculous slate. Before last year this race at Pocono was relatively tame. 2018 actually saw zero natural cautions. I am expecting a calm race this time around but the Truck Series is known for dumb drivers doing dumb things… Any place differential points you can score while picking the top finishers is key. Just play the best of the best in the series and you should be alright as long as we don’t get a carnage filled race.
