WNBA Strategy Picks for Today

Credit: Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Lynx @ New York Liberty

The Lynx suffered a heartbreaking loss in their opener. They’ll look to rebound from that against the Liberty here. It all begins with Sylvia Fowles. She gets a lineup she can dominate here, and unlike Teaira McCowan she can punish the Liberty if they try to double team her. Aerial Powers was excellent for the Liberty in the first game and will look to continue that here in a plus matchup. She also has the skill set to limit the damage Laney can try to do here. Kayla McBride fit in nicely with the Lynx even without much practice and will look to build on that here. Other players like Dangerfield and Dantas can always go off for the Lynx.

The Liberty don’t have all their firepower available and are struggling for size at the moment. Sabrina Ionescu and Betnijah Laney will continue to carry this team. The matchup is a nightmare for Laney here, but she is a shooter and can always get hot. The Liberty will also try to use screens to free her up. Sabrina Ionescu will be the preferred option here due to the matchup. The likes of Michaela Onyenwere and Sami Whitcomb will play good minutes here and will be needed by the Liberty. This is all around a very tough matchup for the Liberty.

5-Star Plays: Sylvia Fowles

4-Star Plays: Aerial Powers, Kayla McBride, Sabrina Ionescu

GPP-Sleeper: Crystal Dangerfield

Deep Value: Sami Whitcomb

Phoenix Mercury @ Washington Mystics

The Mercury are coming off a loss to the Sun and will look to rebound against the Mystics. Given how the Mystics played in their opener, the Mercury will like their chances here. Britney Griner gets a good matchup here and will look to dominate. Brianna Turner has been solid to start the season and the matchup is a good one for her. Diana Taurasi continues to amaze even as she ages. She makes for another solid option here. Skylar Diggins-Smith and Kia Nurse round out the top options here.

For the Mystics, they’ll look to bounce back here. Tina Charles will have her hands full with Griner here, but she is capable of performing in the matchup. Natasha Cloud, Ariel Atkins, Leilani Mitchell, and Theresa Plaisance will be called upon to do some heavy lifting here. Mitchell faces a former team here and makes for an interesting play. Plaisance is priced nicely but the main worry here is her tendency to get handsy. Erica McCall could see quite a bit of action if Plaisance of Charles gets into foul trouble. I was surprised the Mystics didn’t use more of Jillian Alleyne in the opener. She remains a very intriguing play if she gets the minutes.

5-Star Plays: Britney Griner, Diana Taurasi

4-Star Plays: Tina Charles, Brianna Turner, Natasha Cloud, Skylar Diggins-Smith

GPP-Sleeper: Ariel Atkins

Deep Value: Erica McCall

Las Vegas Aces @ Seattle Storm

This is a rematch of the season opener for both teams. In the first meeting, A’ja Wilson paced the Aces, with Dearica Hamby, Liz Cambage, and Jackie Young providing key support. Liz Cambage only played 19 minutes in that came, her first since 2019. If Cambage is similarly limited here, expect A’ja Wilson and Dearica Hamby to dominate once again. If Cambage gets full run, I love the matchup for her. 30 mins here and she can break the slate. Chelsea Gray had an abysmal debut for the Aces, she’ll look to rectify that here.

For the Storm, it all starts with Breanna Stewart. She’s the best player and the court and will need to dominate here for her team to win. Jewell Loyd gets a nice matchup once again and her scoring will be needed. Sue Bird, Candice Dupree, Ezi Magbegor, and Katie Samuelson will all play supporting roles. The key targets on this team are Stewart and Loyd in this game.

5-Star Plays: Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson

4-Star Plays: Liz Cambage, Jewell Loyd, Dearica Hamby, Chelsea Gray

GPP-Sleeper: Candice Dupree

Deep Value: Ezi Magbegor
