Phoenix Raceway

Phoenix raceway is a flat, one mile track with two completely different sets of corners on either end of the track. The races here tend to see multiple long green flag runs and few cautions overall. Since the addition of the PJ1 traction compound in the upper grooves of the track, passing has become extremely difficult. During the Xfinity race this week the drivers were commenting on high the main groove feels narrower than last November meaning we may see even less passing. Track position will be key. If you remember last November here, Keselowski had the best car but lost spots on pit road every single time and was playing catch up on the track position front all race. Simply losing a couple of spots can greatly change things for a driver.

DFS Outlook

Dominators

On Draftkings and Fanduel we will look to play 2-3 dominators. Last spring the main lineup looked like it would need Keselowski, Elliott, and Harvick until late caution and a shake-up led to Logano leading the final part of the race. Occasionally, we get a driver who dominates most of this race and I definitely believe that is possible this week but with so many laps we are bound to have at least two drivers separate themselves with fast laps alone. On FD I think you can play some one dominator lineups but personally, I will be looking to get two top threats in most lineups.

Lineup Construction

With 312 laps dominators are the most important part of the lineup construction. When building lineups this week I found it difficult to really build a complete lineup on DK. You either need to take an extreme punt play or you will have to get creative with the drivers between $5500 and $7000. I will be leaning heavily on what we saw here last year and on the other short flat tracks like New Hampshire and Richmond. We saw the same cars run really well on  each of these tracks. The biggest question mark for me is if the Gibbs cars found some extra speed on this track type. If you remember, at the Daytona Road Course they showed much better speed than they did last year and that has been the only race in 2021 that has used the 750hp package. There could be some carry over there to Phoenix as well.

Top Plays

Brad Keselowski: Brad dominated here in spring 2020 and had the fastest car in the fall race here. He also dominated New Hampshire and Richmond races. I think that they have a special package for this style of track and the fact that he starts on the pole gives him immediate dominator ability.

Bubba Wallace: Wallace starts 25th and I believe he will contend for a top 15 and even have top 10 upside. This was the first track I pinpointed for him to do well with his new team and I believe he has fantastic upside. Price is really good as well.
