Martinsville Speedway

NASCAR heads to Martinsville this week for the penultimate races in both the Truck and Xfinity Series this week. For the Truck Series, it is their first trip to the track in 2020 with the first race scheduled for April getting canceled due to covid. The Truck Series normally runs this track twice a year so we still have plenty to go off in terms of track history for this race. However, on the Xfinity side of things, we will have a much harder time of it. Since 1994, the Xfinity Series has run at Martinsville just once. Kevin Harvick won that race back in 2006. That race saw 19 cautions and was an absolute mess. For those unfamiliar with Martinsville, it is the shortest track the NASCAR races on. It has short, flat corners with drag strip like straightaways. It offers tons of carnage potential and exciting racing.

Weekend Preview

The Xfinity race will have plenty of unknowns. I am expecting lots of carnage so that probably means we see long green flag runs and a low DNF total. This series has been a wreck fest all year though and I imagine we see some stupid moves this week. There are so many good place diff plays as well as value options that we will be looking for at least 1 dominator plus our AJ Allmendinger types. There are too many driver and team changes to list here so be sure to check out my cheat sheet for a breakdown of everyone in the race.

Favorite Play: AJ Allmendinger

I have been trying to stay away from the obvious chalk as my top plays but with so many awesome value plays this week I decided to go chalky. AJ starts 37th this week and has to be considered a top contender for the win. In his Cup Series carrer, Martinsville was always one of his very best tracks where he contended for top 5s on a regular basis. In 10 races with JTG at Martinsville he finished 11th or better 7 times. He had an oil leak and a wreck and a 14th in the other 3. I expect in this Xfinity field that will have little experience here that AJ will have a huge advantage on the field.

Race Preview

Because there are soooo many good super value plays this week I am looking at playing at least two dominators and still playing the likes of Kligerman and Mayer with them. There are a ridiculous amount of great options below $7500 and a few under $6000. Drivers who don’t even have to work hard to break 30 on DK and will offer 40-45 point upside. Because of this I will go heavy on Mayer and Kligerman then simply mix in my favorite potential dominators. This race has been either tame or complete carnage. It is one of those cautions breed cautions situations. If we get a tame race then we could see a one main dominator situation who crushes the long run in stage 3. Or we will see 10+ cautions and mutliple leaders and some punts who score really well.

Favorite Truck Series Play: Carson Hocevar

12th at Dover, 15th at Gateway (which probably has the closest correlation to Martinsville), and 17th at Bristol. He starts 33rd and based on those results has a fairly strong upside. However, I think that his upside is even higher. Hocevar is someone I am extremely high on as a prospect and this track type is what his specialty is. He crushes the late model scene on tight short tracks and I think he has huge potential. At only $7,600 he offers killer value and is my favorite play.
