Texas Motor Speedway

Texas is a 1.5-mile high-speed intermediate track. It was recently repaved in 2017 with a complete reconstruction of turns 1 and 2. Since this time the track has become incredibly hard to drive but more importantly incredibly hard to pass on. Much like Kentucky last week we see drivers struggle to make passes and they often must rely on pit strategy to gain track position. Of course, like most tracks with a new surface, tire wear is minimal making it easier for teams to use strategy. Both the Xfinity and Truck Series were crash-filled here in 2019 and there is no reason to expect that to change. We will not have practice or qualifying for this week so the DFS Army research station will be our best tool for helping build lineups.

Xfinity Preview

No other way to start this preview than by talking about Kyle Busch. He makes his return to the Xfinity Series for the first time since winning at Charlotte in May. He will start deep in the field and of course, will be the favorite for the win. I am looking at looking him in and trying to find the earlier dominator who will finish top 5 to pair with him. So let us call this a “2 dominator strategy”. Now that we have used up all the salary by doing this it will be important to find great value plays to round out the lineups. There seem to be quite a few viable options this week which is promising considering how chalky our top tier options will be.

If you are new to NASCAR check out this article I wrote explaining lineup creation!

Race Procedure

Pit selection:

  • Pit selection order for the race is based on finishing position from the July 10th race at Kentucky, followed by new entries in order of points.

Starting lineup for race one:

  • Starting Positions 1-12: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 13-24: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 25-36: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Lastly, Positions 37-40: Open teams in order of owners points

Favorite Xfinity Series Play: Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch is in the race for this weekend and is going to be the favorite for the win. Because the starting lineup is based on points, Kyle will start deep in the field offering a ton of place differential points on top of the fact he likely dominates the 2nd half of the race. It will be interesting to see is Austin Cindric can contend with KB this week. Cindric is clearly the best car on 1.5 mile tracks and is likely Kyle’s biggest threat.

Truck Preview

Last year was an absolute mess at Texas. The entire series did itself a disservice with the performance they put on. Over the course of the two races, 24 (37.5%) of the trucks failed to finish the race. In the second race, we saw 13 cautions and 14 DNFs which resulted in Ray Ciccarelli finish 16th, Jesse Iwuji finish 17th, and Jen Jo Cobb finish 18th. Needless to say, it was a tough one to call for DFS. For this race, we have Kyle Busch back behind the #51 truck. Much like the Xfinity race, I will be playing a ton of Kyle Busch. Unlike the Xfinity race, I will not be worrying about finding another driver to lead some laps. I will be finding all the place differential plays I can. There is no reason to be afraid of the super punts in Benning and Cobb since we saw last year they can definitely pay off. Most of the field will be in play this week for Trucks which is a good thing. It will just depend on the Kyle Busch salary on what were are able to do.

Race Procedure

Pit selection:

  • Order for pit selection based on finishing position from the July 11th race at Kentucky, followed by new entries in order of points.

Starting lineup:

  • Starting Positions 1-10: Random draw of teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 11-21: Random draw of teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 22-32: Random draw of teams in those positions in owner points
  • Any vehicles that are eligible for the Event in position 33rd – 40th will be assigned starting positions based on their order of eligibility.

Favorite Truck Series Play: Tate Fogleman

Trying to avoid the obvious here. Kyle Busch is a must. Chastain is a beautiful play. We need to find keep plays to pair with these two high priced drivers. Fogleman is roughly a 20th place truck every week. He will start 31st for this race and if we get a few crashes as with last year then Fogleman can be a top 15 threat. Should offer good solid value.
