Detroit Golf Club At A Glance for PGA DFS

Designed by legendary architect, Donald Ross, Detroit Golf Club weighs in at 7,340 yards as a par 72 with a full compliment of par 5s and par 3s this week.  I won’t go into how Ross is completely misrepresented as an architect, as this isn’t the place for such a debate.  However, the trained eye will notice how little earth is typically moved with a Ross design.  Natural humps and ridges in greens, with swales and fall-away backs, are where Ross shines.  As a result, putting can present several “greens within a green.”  Hit the right plateau, and you typically have a makeable putt.  Miss the right plateau and you might have your work cut out for you.  That said, there isn’t a specific way to attack a typical Ross design.  You need to keep an open mind because many holes play differently as they use the natural land to weave their way around the property and almost tell a story.  Decisive tee shots and precise approaches will definitely yield opportunity, though.

The course is expected to play more difficult than last year (where it ranked 8th easiest on tour).  Detroit Golf Club plans to grow the rough out a bit to penalize wayward tee shots.  So, driving accuracy might play a little bigger role than last year.

Previous winners:

2019 – Nate Lashley
Previous years, this tournament was the Quicken Loans National and was hosted by a different course, TPC Potomac.

Being we have little course history to go on here, you are going to rely more heavily than usual on your DFS Army coaches.  And, you might also lean on playing a bit more of a “game theory” angle for gpps aiming to take more advantage of ownership than usual.  Touts do make mistakes, and they are increasingly prone to make said mistakes on courses with little hard evidence to go on.  You might lean on recent form a bit more than usual here while still realizing golf is an inherently volatile game.  A hot golfer with PGA Tour talent is capable of destroying any golf course and nearly any setup.  Bear that in mind as you read around the industry.

Key Statistics for Daily Fantasy Golf:  Rocket Mortgage Classic

Again, with little course history, there aren’t a lot of true “key stats” to put all our focus into.  However, we do know Ross designs (and some rumored amped up rough) should lend to your precision stats like…

  • Strokes Gained – Off the Tee
  • Strokes Gained – Approach
  • Scramble %
  • Birdie or Better %

All of these key stats will be featured in one place:  Our PGA Research Station!  Along with odds drifts, player salaries and projections, these stats (and more) will guide your research in a profitable direction.  Here is a sample of a recent week on the PGA Tour.

This graphic is literally just the tip of the iceberg.  Key stats like Strokes Gained, and many tabs covering Showdown Tools, Field Ranker, and a Tournament Comparison page all team up to give you everything you could possibly need to build that winning DFS lineup!

A Few Early Players to Watch

NOTE – The top five players in the World Golf Rankings have chosen to sit this one out.  Also, due to COVID19, we can add Harris English and Dylan Frittelli to the list of those testing positive for the virus.  They will not be playing this week.  However, Webb Simpson will return after only a one week hiatus due to a positive test from a family member.

Bryson DeChambeau – Your odds-on favorite coming out of the gate this week at 6/1 to win.  Bryson merits watching each week as he keeps rolling with deep tourney finishes since the restart of the 2020 season.  Personally, I’m watching for ownership percentages to populate, and I will be considering another fade strictly for the purpose of being underweight the field as DeChambeau becomes a hotter and hotter commodity in such a volatile sport.

Victor Hovland – Three consecutive top 25 finishes including a darned near top 10 last week and I’ll be looking to grab plenty of Hovland shares banking on the continued recent form trend and a course we don’t know much about historically for DFS.

Tyrell Hatton – This might be a popular name this week with our lack of top 20 golfers in the 156-player field.  In nine PGA/Euro Tour appearances, Hatton has eight top 20 finishes and is currently ranked #15 in the world.  He has a win already in 2020 (Arnold Palmer in March) and checks some of the precision boxes we might look at (Greens in Regulation, SG: Approach and SG: Putting) really well.  Another “ownership watch” player, but I’m more inclined to eat some chalk here.

Kyle Stanley – Another “box checker” hitting Driving Accuracy, GIR, and SG: Tee to Green pretty hard for a guy priced at $7100 on Draftkings.  Stanley finished 24th last week showing solid recent form, and in our only sample at Detroit Golf Club, he finished 21st.

Of course, many other players will emerge and make a lot of sense this week.  But, that is where our coaching comes in. Our discussions will be lively and interactive all week long and through the showdowns across all four rounds.

As the week pops more data and more expert opinion, our PGA DFS Cheatsheets will save you tons of time.  No longer will you need to dive deeper into numbers if your schedule won’t allow.  Simply wait for our most accurate coaches (3rd party ranked) to drop their notes and pivots on this week’s key plays!
