Martinsville Speedway

Wednesday night will kick off a 5 NASCAR race week with some short track action at Martinsville Speedway. Martinsville is a tight, half-mile track with low banked corners. It offers some of the best racing action in all of NASCAR. Last year we saw a rules package that led to very little passing, especially for the lead. Thankfully NASCAR has taken a ton of downforce away from the cars which will see them race a lot more like the 2017-2018 races. Goodyear is bringing a new tire compound for this race which should provide more grip, but more importantly produce more tire wear. In recent years we saw two tires stops be prevalent and teams able to really go a long time on a set off tires. Tire fall off is massive for setting up passing and also rewards drivers who can maintain speed over the long run. We usually get some ultra long runs early in the race where your main dominators really chew up the laps led. Later in the race, we start to see drivers get impatient which causes our wrecks and caution numbers to go up. Since we again have no qualifying and practice, I will be leaning heavily on our DFS Army Research Station for making picks for this race.

Quick Facts

TV: FS1

Laps: 500  Stages: 130/260/500

Pit selection:

  • Order based on finishing position from the June 7 race at Atlanta, followed by new entries in order of points.

Starting lineup:

  • Starting Positions 1-12: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 13-24: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 25-36: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Lastly, Positions 37-40: Open teams in order of owners points

Competition Caution:

We should expect an early competition caution around lap 40-50. Tire wear is high so NASCAR will want to give teams a chance to look at everything fairly early into the first run.

DraftKings

500 laps for this race gives us tons of Dominator points to be had. This is very similar to Bristol in that it will be crucial to pick the main dominators. Without them, you will likely struggle to cash a lineup. For this race I would recommend an “at least two” dominator setting for lineups but really look to get three top tier drivers in lineups when you can. If DraftKings continue to give us wacky pricing this may be easier than it should be. Of course, after we figure out who we want for dominators we will then need to look for the best place differential plays. Still going off the random draw for starting positions so we are getting some good value plays throughout the field.

Favorite Stud Play: Martin Truex Jr

Going back to MTJ this week for my top play. There are tons of elite dominator plays starting up front but none have been as consistent as Truex here. He holds the best average finish over the last 5 races. Truex won here last fall after leading 464 laps. He also has four finishes of 4th or better in the last five races. 8th in the other race. If what Goodyear says about the new tire compound is true and we see more tire fall off this race then Truex has yet another advantage on the field. He is the absolute best of managing tires over the long run. There is a massive correlation between how he attacks the road courses and Martinsville and I think given all the information we have that he will be a massive threat to dominate.

Favorite Value Play: Ryan Preece

Christopher Bell is too obvious for this spot. Ryan Preece may see some higher ownership simply due to pricing but people really tend to shy away from him. Preece comes from a short track modified background and this style of track suits him best. He will start 28th this week and will offer top 15 upside. Finished 19th and 16th at Martinsville last year. If he can replicate that type of performance then he will be a top threat to reach the optimal lineup.

FanDuel

We are going to look to play FanDuel fairly similar to DraftKings this race. Have to hit those dominators. Depending on where salaries end up we will then look to attack the drivers who can finish top 10 or even top 5. Drivers can really make an impact here. Someone like an Austin Dillon who has 6 top 15s and 2 top 5s can be an extremely sneaky but also important play here. Don’t be afraid to play some of those ultra value plays like Wallace, Preece, and Custer who can open up lineup construction.

Favorite Overall Play: Jimmie Johnson

This isn’t really going out on a limb but I feel like he is just too good of a play. The momentum is there and the 48 car has legit speed every week now. 9 wins, 19 top 5s, and the best average finish of any driver in the field at Martinsville. Starting 21st he will offer some place differential points and if he has a clean race I fully expect him to finish inside the top 10 this week. At his price, I think that would be an incredible score to pair with your top 2 dominator plays.

NASCAR on SuperDraft

Three weeks and a row we have annihilated the competition on SuperDraft. We absolutely owned the leaderboard with multiplier DFSArmy members taking 1st in every single contest. We have the formula figured out for success on SD and plan on continuing the domination this week. For Martinsville, we are getting to look for the Dominator in the Champion spot again. Too many laps out there so we will want to attack those drivers. SuperDraft have raised the multiplier for the back tier drivers again. While they are not as high as Bristol these multipliers will still bring much of the field into play.  Our projections are the best out there and we will be sure to have all the T’s crossed on this race as well.
