Daytona 500

The first race of every NASCAR Cup Series season is also it’s biggest and most prestigious. The Daytona 500 is the sports most important race and is compete on a 2.5-mile behemoth of a track build by NASCAR founder Bill France in the late 50’s. This added intensity makes for quite the high pressure, action packed event. For DFS it is also our biggest event with Draftkings and FanDuel offering their biggest prize pools of the year.  At Daytona the cars run in huge packs due to the draft. This often leads to big wrecks taking out large portions of the field. For this article we are going to look at some of the aspects to help prepare for the race and also let you know what the DFS Army can offer you not just for the Daytona 500 but for NASCAR race all year long.

DFS Outlook

Dominators

For this race there is the potential for a lone dominator but it is not very likely. In the last 6 Daytona races we have only seen one major dominator, Ryan Blaney in the 2018 Daytona 500. Blaney led 118 laps and ended up 7th. Other than that the most laps led in that stretch was 51 by Ricky Stenhouse who finished 17th in July 2018. The new rules package on Superspeedway creates a better draft for the car behind. This makes holding the lead harder. You will definitely want to look at some of the top teams for drivers like Logano, Harvick or Hamlin who can use teammates and elite cars to maintain the lead. Something that will certainly create changes at the front will be green flag stops and stage breaks. At most, you will look for one traditional dominator.

The Big One

The big one is a big wreck that takes out a large chunk of cars. At the Superspeedways like Daytona, it is a fairly common occurrence. Avoiding these kinds of wrecks is crucial for having a successful day. From a DFS mindset, a wreck is a killer especially for anyone who starts in the front half of the field. Large negative place differential of a wrecked driver/s makes it really hard for a lineup to cash. These Daytona races are averaging 8 cautions and 44.2 caution laps per race. There are roughly 16 DNF’s per race here over the last 6 races. During that 6 race stretch, we are seeing an average of 11 cars per race score a negative place differential of 10 or higher. Hard to predict but a must avoid to win.

Value Plays

Unlike any other track, the cheapest plays can oftentimes be the best plays. We have already shown the negative side of the big wreck but the positive side comes from the back of the field. If there are drivers scoring negative place differential then obviously somebody has to be getting a good chunk of positive place differential. These drivers come in all forms with the safest options often coming from the rear of the field. Identifying the best options from this group is the key to winning big for Daytona. This is where our research station is a fantastic tool.
