Welcome to the DFS Army NBA Free Squares article, where I will try to break down my favorite NBA Free Squares and Fanduel and Draftkings for Today’s NBA slate.
So what is a Free Square exactly? In DFS we define the Free Square as a player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate.
This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Often times, this will be a low-cost player who is thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot. Each slate we will take a look at three or four players which represent great value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square
My NBA Free Squares for Today 🇺🇸 December 18th
Detroit Pistons
If Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond are out again today, we can go right back to Detroit for some value just like we did Monday night. Markief Morris and Christian Wood will be the two I will target. Monday, Wood played 28 minutes and scored 24 fantasy points, he’s priced up more on DK than Fanduel, so I’ll target him on Fanduel first. Markief Morris is a good value on Fanduel as well, so I’ll target him there for $4,900 before I target him on DK at $5,500. Monday he played 32 minutes and scored 33.75 fantasy points with Drummond and Griffin out.
Other Pistons we can target include Derrick Rose (who gets a nice usage bump with Drummond and Griffin off the floor). Luke Kennard and Bruce Brown. Kennard has scored 30 and 38.25 fantasy points in his last two games, while Brown has scored 39 and 48. Both will be solid options if Drummond and Griffin are out tonight.
If Drummond and Griffin play, I like Drummond the most on this team and everyone else gets knocked down a peg for me.
Malik Monk $3,300 / $3,800
The sites are sleeping on this guy and they’ve still got him priced as a punt despite him having two very good games in a row. Last game against the Kings, Monk dropped 23 points, 10 reb, 4 ast and 1 steal in 27 minutes on his way to 45 fantasy points on the night. Tonight he gets a matchup against the Cavaliers who are dead last in the league against opposing guards. He should be in line for a big game here tonight and he’s one, if not THE best value on the slate.
Davis Bertans $6,500 / $5,800
Thomas Bryant, Moe Wagner and Rui Hachimura are all out tonight so for the Wizards so Bertans should be looking at well over 30 minutes in this one. Bertans has scored 29.5, 20.5, 50.75, 36.75 and 41 fantasy points in his last 5 games. He gets a solid matchup against the Chicago Bulls who really are not a strong defensive team so this is a real nice spot for him today. His price on Fanduel is better than his price on Draftkings so I’ll target him there first. Ian Mahinmi is an option here as well, but, he’s no longer dirt cheap and his ceiling is really limited so I won’t have much of him tonight.

Kemba Walker $7,400 / $7,600
The Celtics will be without Marcus Smart and Gordon Hayward tonight so that is going to lead everyone to Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum (for good reason). I want to get an edge against the field by targeting Kemba Walker here at just $7,400 on DK and $7,600 on FD tonight. Kemba Walker gets a +8.3% usage increase up to 37.6% with Hayward and Smart off the floor. That increased usage has led to +14.19 fantasy points per 36 minutes for him. I’m thinking he’ll be much lower owned than he should be in this spot so he makes for a great pivot off the chalk tonight.
What if???
If Karl Anthony Towns is out there are several ELITE options we can target tonight. First, Jeff Teague gets a usage increase of 3.7% up to 23.8% and he averages around 1.15 fantasy points per minute with Towns out. Andrew Wiggins leads the team with a 29.7% usage rate, and scores around the same per minute at 1.13. The value that could open up, however, will be too good to get away from if Towns is out. Gorgui Dieng would likely be the starting Center and he’s dirt cheap across the industry, priced at only $4,000 on Dk and dead min price $3,500 on Fanduel. He’s an autoplay if Towns is out and he gets the start. Others on the T’Wolves that get a bump are Robert Covington and possibly Noah Vonleh (check starting lineups).
With all that being said, Karl Anthony Towns has the #1 AND1 rating tonight of 24.5. If he plays he’s in a smash spot against the Pelicans and you should get him in your lineups if you can.
