Race Notes

Road America marks the third Xfinity Series road course race in the last month. At 4.048 miles long it is by far the longest race track the series races on. Due to its length the number of laps per stage and for the entire race is incredibly small. This race used to be a 5 laps longer but with race times getting close to three hours NASCAR decided to shorten the length in 2015. Fuel mileage has always been crucially important here and this becomes even more important if and when there are late race cautions leading to G-W-C (Green-White-Checkerd or Overtime period) finish and the addition of laps. 50% off the races have seen a G-W-C finish here. There are currently 39 cars on the entry list meaning we will see 1 car not qualify for the race.

As always the DFS Army Research Station will be available and the Domination Station will be available AFTER starting lineups are set.

Lineup Building

Dominator / Top Tier

At only 45 laps Road America offers very little in terms of dominator points. This make for a race fairly reliant on finishing position and place differential. Reasonably speaking the driver who wins the race will likely score some  dom points and will be needed to have the optimal lineup. In the top tier we see AJ Allmendinger return in the #10 and will be one of the main favorites for the win this weekend. Austin Cindric who is 2 for 2 on the Road Courses this year will look to win his third race in the last month. Bell and Allgaier are going to be threats as well for the win.

Mid Tier

In the mid tier it will always be about finding value and drivers who offer the most upside and/or place differential. This week we get incredible value with Matt Dibenedetto at $8,400 driving the #18 for Joe Gibbs. Regan Smith returns to the #8 for JRM and Kaz Grala returns to the #21 for RCR. Outside of those three drivers we see a field fairly similar to what we see on a regular basis. This race feels setup to be a bit chalky but as we saw at Mid Ohio with both Hawksworth and Smith having issues anything can happen.

Low Tier/Punts

In the lower tier there appears to be far less in terms of start and parks and quite a few drivers who can pay off with solid races. As with the last couple road course races we have seen key drivers from normal “punt” section deliver top 15 finishes and finishing as the most important drivers on the slate. This will likely be the case again this week. There are tons of driver and team changes for this week in this area. Quite frankly far too many to mention here. For more info on there drivers check out the VIP article called The Inside Line: Xfinity Series for this weeks race.

I will also answer any questions you may have in the VIP Slack!
