Schnarr’s Super Picks DFS PGA Preview – The Wyndham Championship

Every week on the PGA Tour a new course means a new set of challenges. This article will examine the course being played and give specific insight on some keys for the week that other previews may be overlooking. This article will also breakdown players who stand out on both FanDuel and DraftKings for Cash Game and GPP formats. Finally, I will be reviewing my picks from before and going into a deeper dive on my Cash Game team in an attempt to better my own process while hopefully helping you with yours. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr.

Review from last week

$11k and up (Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy)

With this tier I wrote how last weeks result likely won’t impact ownership all that much and how as a result Brooks was my favourite of the elite plays. Going into the event Brooks was still my favourite and that paid off as Brooks ultimately won the event and put up the most fantasy points and did it at a very low 7.96% average across major GPP’s.

$10k and up (Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood)

Got the first group right and this group wrong. JT was my favourite and he had the worst performance out of all three getting beat by 21 fantasy points over the lower owned Fleetwood.

High $8k (Hideki Matsuyama, Bryson Dechambeau, Adam Scott)

Within this group I was overweight on Hideki, off of Dechambeau and just under on Adam Scott. With a middling performance from Hideki this was not an ideal week to be overweight. One thing that saved me however was that Hideki was the 2nd highest owned player in the field, with 28.45% average across major GPP’s, making my 35% not too cumbersome.

Tony Finau – DK: $8400

Was on Finau which was very unfortunate with him being popular and outscored greatly by Webb Simpson in his same tier.

Patrick Reed – DK: $8000

Reed was a guy that I actually ended up off of last minute. He’s one of the players I can never figure out and I ended up liking other options both above and below. Reed ended up middle of the pack scoring wise as he only put up 14 birdies throughout the week.

Danny Willett – DK $7600

Willett was a guy I liked as a low owned GPP option. This did not end up working out well as Willett had a bottom 15 performances on the week.

Overall, a pretty disappointing week for me in GPP and cash (as you will see). I typically scale back quite a bit in these no cut events which is going to be one of the few positives I will say for this week

Course Preview

In this section I will point out a few things that I find interesting about the course. If you’re a member at the Army you also have Josh’s article for more extensive reasoning on what the key stats are and our Domination Station showing what stats have been the most important historically.

  • The Tour heads to North Carolina to play Sedgefield Country Club, a par 70 measuring 7130 yards
  • Despite only having two par fives I still think par 5 scoring is crucial this week as we saw a ton of eagles last year at this event. Typically I weight par five scoring less at these Par 70/71 courses – however, I think this week with both of them being reachable and plenty of eagles out there to get if you can find the guy that gets a few throughout the week that will greatly help out your fantasy team
  • Genreal sentiment around this course is you need to be accurate off of the tee to give yourself the right line and from there its up for grabs to those that bring their approach game. Looking at past winners and T5/T10’s this has shown to be pretty accurate. As a result, I’ll be emphasizing SG: Approach and players who have shown in the past the ability to do well at these events that all about ball placement off of the tee
  • Course history has been indicative of success here so I will be putting a bit more stock into it this year

Interesting Plays

In this section I will discuss plays that I like/dislike and guys that I find interesting for the week. Because this article comes out on a Monday this list can change, anyone I change my mind on will be discussed later in the week in our PGA coaching channel

$10k an up (Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Colin Morikawa, Brandt Snedeker)

A lot to like in this range. Snedeker won last year and him, Simpson and Hideki all fit the traditional mould of player that would have success at this event. Morikawa is coming in red hot fresh off of a win last week at the Barracuda Championship. And you have Spieth who had a ridiculous 22 birdies last week but struggled mightily to avoid the big number. Upon first look I am having a real tough time distinguishing where I am going to end up this week. I think theres a solid justification behind each of these guys going into this week. I will probably have expected ownership playing a pretty big role in where I end up this week. If I had to pick right now my favourite to least would be Simpson, Spieth, Matsuyama, Morikawa, Snedeker – but as mentioned I think all plays are justified and my decisions will be based on expected ownership.

Patrick Reed – DK: $9700

After ending up off of Reed last week I think I will be on him this week at this price and at this event. Compared to last week I feel this is a better course fit for Reed and although I think we likely see quite a bit of ownership at this pricepoint I want a piece of Reed at Sedgefield.

Viktor Hovland – DK: $9500

Hovland is a really interesting option this week and I am not sure what to do.  Hovland is red hot with three straight top 20’s – but has yet to finish inside of the top 10 in a PGA event. Hovland is sure to carry some ownership with how he has come alive on Tour but if he finishes with a T15, that likely wont be enough for the big GPP win. Hovland’s eventual breakthrough is inevitable, but I also think if he ends up being one of the highest owned players this week it is viable to fade or be underweight. As mentioned, still unsure where I stand on this, I will update later in the week for all members.

Low $8K (Dylan Frittelli, Sungjae Im, Byeong Hun An, Scott Piercy, Jason Kokrak)

I think this range is interesting and likely to track a lot of attention in both Cash Game’s and GPP formats. Frittelli is a recent winner and the rest of this tier have all had some solid performance as of late, but none have broke through in the past month or so to find themselves in contention on Sunday. For the most part this range fits the mould of player that will draw a bit more attention this week which I think wil bring a bit more attention to this tier as a whole. I find myself liking both Frittelli and An upon first look, I will expand on this later in the week.

Peter Malnati – DK: $7100

I was scrolling through the list on DraftKings for my first look and thought I had missed Malnati, only to see him at $7100. I think given his recent play Malnati is a strong consideration for cash games at his pricepoint and someone I will likely be on to save some salary with a reliable cut maker.

Cash Game Review

I will end each article going over my double-up cash game line-up for the week, breaking down my plays and reflecting for the following week

The Team (14-11) – Current Streak 2 Losses

Henrik Stenson – T27

Webb Simpson -2

Hideki Matsuyama – T43

Matt Kuchar – T43

Rafa Cabrerra Bello – T12

Keegan Bradley – T61

This week was a disaster from start to finish. I was pretty set on the core of Hideki Matsuyama, Webb Simpson and Henrik Stenson. With this core in place I had a few different decisions to make with the rest of my lineup. I ended up looking to fit in another guy I felt had a legitimate shot of winning (ended up on Kuchar) and did so by putting in salary savers in RCB and Keegan Bradley. This did not work out well at all with Keegan having one of the worst weeks out of the whole field and Kuchar, Hideki and Stenson all disappointing at their price points. The team was never really in legitimate contention throughout the week. I debated skipping cash this week entirely with the no cut event but decided to go through with a team that I was not all that confident in for the week.
