MME Playbook for FanDuel and DraftKings MLB DFS: 5/16

Donuts to Dollars

The GPP/MME playbook is more or less a foundation to build upon for your DFS tournament strategy and mass-multi entry (MME) adventures. I personally am a full-time MME player across all major platforms each night. The strategy I have laid out for you is where I personally am with how I plan on attacking the slate.

Hit me up on Twitter  @DFSnDONUTS and you can also find me on YouTube | Twitch  | iTunes with supplemental commentary and teaching. You’ll really find me in our VIP coaching forums inside coaching and detailing plays and strategic concepts from contest selection to lineup construction across all our main sports.

MLB DFS Pitching Pool for MME

Jose Quintana generally will strike out a guy per inning but has two outliers that have dipped his SO/9 rate this season (only 4 Ks in 11.2 IP in those two games). I expect him to be around his average and not have problems with the Reds lineup. I think it’s reasonable to expect a 6 IP, 6 K, 3 ER type game from him with upside if he keeps the ball in the park.

Eric Lauer offers up some salary saving potential with his current price tag. The Pirates also have just a 3.6 IRT which is the lowest on the entire slate. While Lauer is not brimming with upside, he does have a good matchup today and allows us to load up on bats in MME.

Adam Wainwright is priced nicely for MME with upside at his price tag. The Braves are similar to the Cubs in that they can throw up a stinker or 10 runs and often without notice. Wainwright can give up some runs, too, allowing 19 ER over 43.1 IP this season. That said, he rarely gets shelled and has scored at least 13.90 in 4-of-8 starts. We will hedge this.

MME Pitchers I’ll give a minimum 3-5%

Louis Castillo has dominated this season with 70 Ks in just 56.1 IP. It’s incredible that he’s given up just 11 ER this entire season and 1 or less ER in 6 of his 9 starts! The Cubs are volatile and Castillo held opposing hitters to a 174 foot batted ball distance in his last two starts. He’s priced up but boy is he producing.

Trevor Williams has a nice matchup against the Padres and has 5 Ks in each of his last three starts while going at least 6 IP in all 8 starts this season. I think he has a fantastic chance to get the quality start and win bonus on FanDuel.

Single Entry GPP Pitchers

I don’t think SE play is a good idea today with no clear cut stand out options. There are teams in better spots but generally I love the slates where we can just go super heavy on top options and dwarf the fields’ exposure. It’s that simple to me. However, I think Jose Quintana will be lower owned and has upside as a SE pitcher today.

Specific Daily Fantasy MLB Stacks and Teams to Target for Stacking for GPPs and MME

When I select my stacks I like to run through the trending tab, batter matchups tab, top-10 lists for a bunch of different stats, and the top rated players within the Research Station. I set the FanDuel stacks to 4-3 and the DraftKings stacks to 5-2 in the DFS Army optimizer.

Tier 1 Stacks for FanDuel and DraftKings

These are the teams I want to stack with my highest exposure. Whether you decide to use the controlled stacks (example below) or the randomized stack exposure (as I do, the example provided), I’ll have my highest percentage on the Tier 1 teams).

Seattle Mariners (40-60%)

Pineda is a shell of his former self prior to an arm injury a few years ago. He’s given up 7 HR in his last 30 IP and 23 ER over those 7 games. While he still has strikeout upside with 30 Ks in 30 IP, he gives up tons of hits. The Mariners are similar to the Twins in that they have plenty of upside but are volatile. Still, they’re my top team.

Minnesota Twins (40-60%)

I generally like to target the Twins bats when they face a lefty, but today they face Erik Swanson who struggles to make bats miss and gives up plenty of contact. In just 28.1 IP this season, Swanson has given up 20 ER and 7 HRs. That is absolutely terrible and the Twins have PLENTY of power.

Tier 2 Stacks for FanDuel and DraftKings

These are the teams I am generally using to hedge my pitcher investment and/or don’t have a clear read on what might happen but understand extreme outcomes are possible.

Atlanta Braves (30-50%)

The Braves have a 5.1 IRT and Wainwright is either a stud or a dud in his 8 starts this year. The bullpen isn’t sharp either and if the Braves get to Adam early, then they will have an opportunity to feast on the pen of the Cardinals.

Toronto Blue Jays (30-50%)

I can’t stand stacking this team. They are continuously in great spots but fail to meet expectations. However, they face off against one of the worst pitchers in baseball over the last few years in Dylan Covey. He’s looked bad this year, too. He has 10 walks and 10 hits against him in just 10.2 IP, allowing 7 ER and giving up 2 HR, too. Yikes.

Saint Louis Cardinals (20-40%)

This team can explode at a moments notice and have plenty of double-digit scoring games, scoring 14 just two days ago. Julio Teheran has been a good pitcher as of late, allowing just 8 ER over his last 4 starts across 25 IP. I think Julio wins this showdown but I’ll certainly have some Cards exposure due to their upside if the bats get rolling.

Remaining Exposure Percentage

Any remaining exposure percentage that is leftover I am going to allow the optimizer to fill in at random. Baseball is incredibly volatile and hard to predict. While we can project outcomes, predicting them is inherently a losing battle. Allowing the DS to plug in stacks embraces the random factor that MLB DFS has to offer.

Or if you want to have controlled stacks and select the specific players you want to be used and in what type of stacks then you can used the controlled hitter stack setting. This is just an example and I randomly clicked through quickly and was able to pump out 50 lineups in a flash. I would also make sure the stack percentage was at 100% on each side for a real optimized CSV file.

Domination Station DFS Optimizer for GPP’s and Mass-Multi Entering (MME)

This is how I personally use the DFS Army Domination Station optimizer for MLB MME

  1. Cut all pitchers out of my player pool that I know I 100% DO NOT WANT

    1. Add in all the pitchers I am okay with the optimizer using and then put 3-5% minimum exposure on my favorite pitchers (the above pitching pool). This ensures that they show up in at least 7-10 out of my 150 lineups.
  2. Identify all teams I want to stack

    1. If using controlled stacks then create my player pool of hitters for MME
    2. If using the randomized stacks (which I do) then I begin to create percentages for all my favorite teams to target adding up to 160-180%
    3. Leave 20-40% stack exposure to allow the optimizer to fill in some random optimized stacks according to your pitcher pool to have some unbiased lineups
  3. Prepare my 150 entry settings

    1. 3 uniques
    2. optimal mode
    3. DFS Army points
    4. Make sure allow opposing pitchers is unchecked
    5. Maximum exposure cap of 60% is how I roll with it. The higher the exposure cap the more “all-in” you will be on a player or two (which I am not a fan of for MLB right now)
    6. Set random stack setting to 4-3 for FanDuel and 5-2 for DraftKings
  4. Run the optimizer
    1. Look at the batters used in the stacks. Did I create 100 Houston lineups and only get 5 George Springers? Okay, use the like/love/adore buttons or boost his projection until I get more of him. Did I get 50 out of 50 Boston stacks with Jackie Bradley and no J.D. Martinez? Boost Martinez and potentially use the dislike buttons on Bradley until he’s a bit lower and Martinez is involved.
    2. You have to tinker a bit to get the higher upside guys sometimes ^^^
  5. Re-run the optimizer until you get what you’re looking for
    1. Go watch Netflix until the games are over
    2. Make a plate of chips and salsa, too
