DFS Army – NHL Breakaway Advice and Strategy for FanDuel and DraftKings – April 1st

Welcome to the DFS Army NHL Game Break!!  You have to start your research somewhere, and often times going game by game thinking about matchups and key players is the first step in our process.  I’m your buddy @LowOwnedWR and you can find me out on Twitter talking hockey and football, even a little WNBA.  But, you’ll really find me in our VIP coaching forums inside coaching and detailing plays and strategic hockey maneuvers in an attempt to make our members better, more fundamentally sound players.  If you are looking for it, we cover it as a team!  Follow me, follow us, interact with me, interact with us, we welcome it all.

NHL DFS At A Glance

The first thing I do when starting my research is look for strong teams facing weak defenses.  I want the best odds I can find to tally goals.  I like the old Corsi number, as it denotes any shot attempt directed towards the net.  It doesn’t matter if this shot attempt goes wide, gets blocked, or finds the back of the twine.  You can’t score if you don’t shoot.  I also love the “High Danger” metrics.  These shots come from the slot (between the dots) and off quick passes or rebounds.  They are what they say they are, and teams allowing a lot of high danger chances also tend to give up goals in bunches….perfect for the DFS player to attack.

If you have questions regarding these numbers, or this chart, don’t hesitate to ask me on our coaching forums.  Simply tag me (same name as my twitter name) and let’s get on the same page.  First and foremost, I’m here to teach people wanting to learn the DFS side of this glorious frozen sport.

New York Rangers @ New Jersey Devils

Odds:  NJ -115, 5.5 o/u

New York Rangers:  With 8 games on the slate you do not need to go desperation mode and play players from awful teams. NYR1 has Zibanejad and Kreider back and Buchnevich is on a 7 game point streak but outside of this NYR does not have much to offer.

5 star plays –  none

4 star plays – Zibanejad, Kreider, Buchnevich

Cash viable – Buchnevich (Value Play)

GPP Sleeper – Zibanejad, Kreider, Buchnevich

New Jersey Devils: At least New York has a good first line, this team has nothing, look elsewhere.

5 star plays – none

4 star plays – none

Cash viable – none

GPP Sleeper – none

Washington Capitals @ Florida Panthers

Odds:  WAS -135, 6.5 o/u

Washington Capitals:  Florida has been bad across the board in their advanced stats and Washington is 4th in the league in goals in the last 10 games. With them still having something to play for and in a good matchup their whole top 6 sticks out to me as in play.

5 star plays –  Ovechkin, Backstrom

4 star plays – Kuznetsov, Hagelin, Wilson, Oshie

Cash viable – Ovechkin, Backstrom, Wilson, Hagelin (Value Play)

GPP Sleeper – Eller, Vrana, Connolly

Florida Panthers: Washington has been bleeding high danger chances as of late and FLA1 remains on fire, for exposure to the Panthers that is as far as I am looking.

5 star plays – Huberdeau

4 star plays – Barkov, Dadonov

Cash viable – none

GPP Sleeper – none

Toronto Maple Leafs @ New York Islanders

Odds:  NYI -115, 6.0 o/u

Toronto Maple Leafs:  In what should be a high event hockey game Toronto looks to be in a good spot for GPPs. With them being a dog on the road and with other games boasting higher implied totals, the dream is that we get them at lower ownership tonight. Auston Matthews and William Nylander both rank top 5 in shots taken over the last 10 games, making them stand out as the best plays from the Leafs.

5 star plays –  Matthews, Nylander

4 star plays – Tavares, Marner, Reilly

Cash viable – Nylander, Johnsson (Value Plays)

GPP Sleeper – Kadri

New York Islanders: Toronto has been bad defensively lately, to say the least, and with NYI1 playing better hockey as of late, they are one of the main stacks I am looking to on this slate. Devon Toews remains on PP1 and still carries a low price tag, so consider him even outside of an Islanders stack.

5 star plays – Barzal

4 star plays – Eberle, Lee, Toews

Cash viable – Eberle, Toews (Value Play), Barzal

GPP Sleeper – none

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Ottawa Senators

Odds:  TB -240, 6.5 o/u

Tampa Bay Lightning:  Tampa should be resting players as they have nothing left to play for and even though they’re still a great team in a good matchup, I am just not looking to roster guys from a team where there can be late scratches and a mess up in the normal minute’s distribution.

5 star plays –  none

4 star plays – Cirelli

Cash viable – none

GPP Sleeper – Cirelli

Ottawa Senators: Brady Tkachuk is averaging over 3 shot attempts per game in his last 10, one of only 9 players to do so. He and White make a nice mini line stack and PP stack but outside of that, this team remains a dumpster fire. Keep the exposure from bad teams limited to its good players. As @MLora would say, “just play good players.”

5 star plays – Tkachuk

4 star plays – none

Cash viable – none

GPP Sleeper – White, Tkachuk, Chabot

Colorado Avalanche @ St. Louis Blues

Odds:  STL -160, 5.5 o/u

Colorado Avalanche:  On the road against a good St. Louis team and as good of a goalie as any recently in Binnington, it is hard to get excited about rostering the Avalanche. If you are just jonesing to play Colorado, MacKinnon, and Barrie both rank top 12 in shot attempts over the last 10 games, so the optimism for those two is there. Kerfoot remains a solid value while remaining on COL1 and the PP1.

5 star plays –  none

4 star plays – MacKinnon, Barrie

Cash viable – Kerfoot (Value Play)

GPP Sleeper – none

St. Louis Blues: STL1 is an elite line and in another solid matchup, I will be rostering them again tonight. Vince Dunn next to Pietrangelo offers good value, he would be locked into my cash line up to allow me to pay up for the stud forwards on this slate.

5 star plays – O’Reilly, Tarasenko

4 star plays – Schenn, Pietrangelo, Dunn

Cash viable – O’Reilly, Dunn, Tarasenko

GPP Sleeper – Bozak, Thomas

Winnipeg Jets @ Chicago Blackhawks

Odds:  WPG -120, 6.5 o/u

Winnipeg Jets:  The Jets have just been god awful lately and with the playoffs right around they need to turn that around ASAP. A matchup with a bad defensive team like CHI seems like the perfect rebound opportunity. WPG2 offers the value you deserve from playing a cold team like this, so that is where I believe you should be getting your exposure from. WPG2 also reunited Laine and Ehlers and they play very well together.

5 star plays –  none

4 star plays – Hayes, Laine, Ehlers

Cash viable – none

GPP Sleeper – Hayes, Ehlers

Chicago Blackhawks: Winnipeg has been allowing shots and chances at a higher rate than any team recently and the Blackhawks still are not technically out of playoff contention. Toews ranked 3rd in shots over the last 10 and to him and Saad is where I will be looking to attack Winnipeg. Anisimov lines up between DeBrincat and Kane making him an intriguing punt option.

5 star plays – Toews

4 star plays – Saad, Kane, Gustaffson

Cash viable – none

GPP Sleeper – Anisimov

Edmonton Oilers @ Vegas Golden Knights

Odds:  VGK -245, 6.5 o/u

Edmonton Oilers:  Vegas technically really does not have anything to play for so keep an eye out on their scratches that could bump up Edmonton’s upside. For Edmonton exposure keep it simple with guys like McDavid and Draisaitl.

5 star plays –  McDavid

4 star plays – Draisaitl, Klefbom

Cash viable – none

GPP Sleeper – none

Vegas Golden Knights: Looks like Vegas will be rolling with their starters tonight despite having nothing to play for. Their coach said these last few games mean something to them BUT it is April Fool’s day so monitor this one closely. Edmonton should have a hard time slowing down VGK1 tonight, look to them for your exposure.

5 star plays – none

4 star plays – Karlsson, Smith, Marchessault, Theodore

Cash viable – Smith

GPP Sleeper – none

Calgary Flames @ Los Angeles Kings

Odds:  CGY -145, 6.5 o/u

Calgary Flames:  They’re basically resting the whole team, do not bother. NOTE ADDED: Looks like CGY1 big 3 are all playing as of now, something to keep an eye on, regardless I would still look elsewhere.

5 star plays –  none

4 star plays – none

Cash viable – none

GPP Sleeper – none

Los Angeles Kings: The Kings have beat some good teams recently and now they draw the Calgary B team. Grundstrom ranks 14th in individual high danger chances for and at near min price he makes for a great value play, stacking him with Kempe gets you LAK2, PP1, and PP2 exposure while saving your salary to pay up elsewhere.

5 star plays – none

4 star plays – Grundstrom, Kempe, Doughty

Cash viable – Grundstrom (Value Play)

GPP Sleeper – Kempe, Grundstrom, Toffoli
