DFS Army – NHL Breakaway Advice and Strategy for FanDuel and DraftKings – April 16th

Welcome to the DFS Army NHL Game Break!!  You have to start your research somewhere, and often times going game by game thinking about matchups and key players is the first step in our process.  I’m your buddy @LowOwnedWR and you can find me out on Twitter talking hockey and football, even a little WNBA.  But, you’ll really find me in our VIP coaching forums inside coaching and detailing plays and strategic hockey maneuvers in an attempt to make our members better, more fundamentally sound players.  If you are looking for it, we cover it as a team!  Follow me, follow us, interact with me, interact with us, we welcome it all.

NHL DFS At A Glance

The first thing I do when starting my research is to look for strong teams facing weak defenses.  I want the best odds I can find to score goals.  I like the old Corsi number, as it denotes any shot attempt directed towards the net.  It doesn’t matter if this shot attempt goes wide, gets blocked, or finds the back of the twine.  You can’t score if you don’t shoot.  I also love the “High Danger” metrics.  These shots come from the slot (between the dots) and off quick passes or rebounds.  They are what they say they are, and teams allowing a lot of high danger chances also tend to give up goals in bunches….perfect for the DFS player to attack.

If you have questions regarding these numbers or this chart, don’t hesitate to ask me on our coaching forums.  Simply tag me (same name as my twitter name) and let’s get on the same page.  First and foremost, I’m here to teach people wanting to learn the DFS side of this glorious frozen sport.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Colombus Blue Jackets

Odds: TB -145, 6.0 o/u

Tampa Bay Lightning: Down 3-0, like we all saw coming. They haven’t been surrendering many shots or chances so I am blaming this one on Vasy. Outside of TB1 tonight it is hard to get excited here.

5 star plays – Kucherov
4 star plays – Sergachev, Point, Stamkos, Cirelli
Cash viable – Kucherov, Cernak, Cirelli
GPP Sleeper – Cernak

Colombus Blue Jackets:  Up 3-0 on who we all thought was the best team in hockey, it is hard to ignore Columbus tonight even with their not so great underlying offensive numbers. CBJ2 with Duchene-Atkinson-Dzingel is the play I like here.

5 star plays – Duchene, Werenski
4 star plays – Dzingel, Panarin, Atkinson
Cash viable – none
GPP Sleeper –  Texier

New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins

Odds:  PIT -165, 5.5 o/u

New York Islanders: Shots and chances, that has been the story of this series, the difference is Lehner has stopped them and Murray has not. Islanders are going for the sweep tonight and can very well pull it off if things stay the same.

5 star plays – Barzal
4 star plays – Eberle, Toews, Lee
Cash viable – Toews (Value Play)
GPP Sleeper – Kuhnhackl

Pittsburgh Penguins: With more playoff games played than any other team the last 3 years, I think the wear is finally starting to show for Pittsburgh. Crosby has been held scoreless the whole series and has a -4, it is just rough all around for Pittsburgh right now.

5 star plays – Malkin, Kessel
4 star plays – Letang, Rust
Cash viable – McCann, Rust
GPP Sleeper – Hornqvist

Winnipeg Jets @ St. Louis Blues

Odds:  STL -150, 5.5 o/u

Winnipeg Jets: Finally, a good showing from the Jets last game. Laine and Ehlers are back together again and they are absolute money together, making them a great mini stack. Outside of that Binnington is still amazing and I am not letting one good game let me start breaking the bank of Winnipeg

5 star plays –  Ehlers, Laine
4 star plays – Byfuglien, Trouba
Cash viable – Laine
GPP Sleeper – Myers, Perreault

St. Louis Blues: Outside of STL1 there just has not been enough offense in this series to make me want to start rostering the depth here.

5 star plays – Tarasenko
4 star plays – O’Reilly, Schenn, Pietrangelo
Cash viable – O’Reilly, Schenn, Tarasenko
GPP Sleeper –  none

San Jose Sharks @ Vegas Golden Knights

Odds:  VGK -145, 6.5 o/u

San Jose Sharks: Sharks slipped along with Jones last game. Fleury has let in at least 3 goals a game this series so it is hard to ignore San Jose. Hertl-Kane-Nyquist is the stack I am looking at here.

5 star plays – Hertl, Karlsson
4 star plays – Burns, Kane, Nyquist, Couture, Pavelski, Meier
Cash viable – Hertl, Burns
GPP Sleeper – none

Vegas Golden Knights: Mark Stone has 6 goals so far this playoffs, and I do not intend to ignore that. VGK2 is my favorite line here but I know I am not alone in that theory, a pivot to VGK1 stands to give you leverage in GPPs while still rostering from the highest total game on the slate.

5 star plays – Stone
4 star plays – Pacioretty, Statsny, Karlsson, Smith, Marchessault, Theodore
Cash viable – Stone, Pacioretty, Statsny
GPP Sleeper – Eakin

DFS NHL Goalies for Today:

Jordan Binnington (BOTH): I will not let one slip up by him completely take me off, he has been arguably the best goalie in the league over the last month and is in a game with a 5.5 goal total. I also need to see the Jets have their legs back for more than one game before I am scared of them again.
