Welcome to the DFS Army NBA Free Squares artcle where I will try and again to break down my favorite NBA Free Squares for Today’s NBA Slate.
So what is a Free Square exactly? In NBA DFS there will be situations and injuries that come up and will lead to bench players in the starting lineup. These players will often be priced as backups (their normal role). The expected increase in their minutes and role will give us someone we can plug in and comfortably expect them to reach and exceed value. The typically low cost of these players will allow us to spend up across the rest of our lineups and lock in some high dollar studs. On some nights, you may find some higher dollar players listed as well because the matchups may just be too good to ignore. Each day I’m going to list my 3 or 4 favorite Free Squares that I’m going to building my lineups around.

My Favorite NBA Free Squares for Today – October 16th
Tonight is opening night and there are only 2 games on the Slate, PHI vs BOS and OKC vs GSW so there are not a ton of “value” plays like we’ll normally see in this article, however, there are a few studs and mid level priced players that I really love tonight.
💥 Joel Embid – PHI – C
“Bigs vs Boston” has been a thing for a few years now and tonight should be a prime spot for Embid to shine. The undersized frontcourt of the Celtics wont have any answer for Embid tonight, who is our highest projected Center on the NBA Research Staion. Embid averaged 47.15 fanduel points per game last year in his 8 games vs the Celtics and I’m expecting at least that much tonight.
💥 Dario Saric – PHI – PF
Newly acquired Sixers Wilson Chandler and Mike Muscala are not expected to play tonight, so Saric should be get around 30 minutes tonight. He’s got a tough matchup against the Celtics wings but we all know he’s got 40 point upside when he’s given the opportunity.

💥 Dennis Schroder – OKC – SG
As of the time of this article Russell Westbrook is not expected to play this evening against the Warriors. The natural move for most people will be to plug in Dennis Schroder who would likely be the starting Point Gaurd if Westbrook sits this one out. Fanduel has him listed as a Shooting Guard, so, you could potentially roster 3 Point Gaurds this evening if Schroder does in fact start at the point for OKC. Last season, he paid off this paid off 5x this salary 59.5% of the time and 6x 36.5% of the time. He was on a different team last year of course, in a different role, but if he starts at the point for Westbrook tonight he’ll be one of the best values on the slate.
💥 Paul George – OKC – SG
Last year when Russell Westbrook was out, Paul George became the #1 option for the Thunder and had a 39% usage rate. In those games without Westbrook he averaged about 1.30 more fantasy points per minute than he did when Westbrook was on the floor. The Thunder will be playing up in pace tonight vs the Warriors who are the fastest pace team in the NBA. This is not quite same situation we had a few years back, with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook on the Thunder where, if one was out you automatically locked in the other, but, its pretty damn close.

💥 Patrick Patterson – OKC – PF
Min priced on Fanduel and expected to play around 25 minutes against the uptempo Warriors. He’s a stretch big who should be able to at least stay on the floor vs the Warriors small ball lineup. Remember on Fanduel you get to drop your lowest score this year, so taking Pat Pat at min price seems like an easy way to load up on your other 8 roster spots this evening without taking too much risk.
💥 Terry Rozier – BOS – PG
Kyrie Irving is making his comeback after a season ending injury last year and while we haven’t heard about any minutes restrictions its probably safe to assume that they will take it easy on Kyrie early on this season. We all saw what Terry Rozier did last year in Kryie’s absence leading the Celtics all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. With Kyrie back in the fold, I still think Rozier will play a big roll in this offense. On Fanduel his $4,100 price tag is way too low even for his assumed off the bench role. With the Celtics presumably taking it easy on Irving and Hayward early on, this is a great spot to get some value on a small slate.

💥 Andre Iguodala – GSW – SG
Draymond Green will be on a minutes restriction early this season as he deals with a nagging knee injury. That restriction should open up more minutes for Iguodala and Jordan Bell. Tonight’s game against the Thunder is likely to get out of hand early if Russell Westbrook does not suit up for OKC so Iguodala could see even more minutes than expected. He’s got a very low price on Fanduel only $4,300 so lock him in for some solid value this evening.
