In this edition of the Shark Autopsy Report, we look at the illustrious Milly Maker tournament, a massive GPP tourney that pays out $1 million to first place. A true tale of the tape contest that everyone, even their mothers knows about and is discussed about extensively throughout the course of the week. Many think that lineup construction to win this tourney is all about the most contrarian construction possible, and sometimes that is the case.

DraftKings’s $5M Milly Maker Contest

What a wild and crazy weekend of DFS NFL style. So much so, that the top scoring lineup and newly minted millionaire on the Main Slate, scored over 300 DK FPTS. A little bit about DraftKings $5M Milly Maker contest, 281,923 entrants paid $20 per entry to compete for the opportunity to win the top prize of $1,000,000.

Most believe that those that win the Milly Maker do so by max entering the contest of 150 entries. They couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, the winner of the week 1 Milly Maker, “Chalk” only had 5 lineups in the contest. Of the top 10 scoring lineups in the week 1 Milly Maker, only 1 player had max entered the contest at 150 entries. Let’s take a look at how the top 10 fared and the number of lineups the played in the Milly Maker.

I’m astonished that Chalk won the contest with only 5 entries, Actually Not At All.  In fact it is a common occurrence that the Milly Maker is won by those who don’t max enter the contest. So if you are looking towards becoming a born again millionaire in week 2, just know that it can be done with not as many entries as you think it takes.

Top 10

Winning Lineup

Chalk ended up outscoring the Milly Maker field by and crushing the runner-up by 16.3 DK FPTS. His roster construction was mainly centered on 1 game, the New Orleans vs. Tampa Bay game. Everyone knows how that game went. The chalk was on the New Orleans side of the ball, but the fantasy goodness was centered on the opposite of the ball with Chalk getting 110.58 DK FPTS from his QB-WR-WR stack of Fitz Magic, Evans, and D-Jax at an impressive 1.67% average ownership for the stack. He wrapped things up on the game with adding Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas on the opposite side of the ball.

Chalk’s winning lineup incorporated 2 RBs and 4 WRs at an average salary spend of $6,500 for RBs and $6,025 for WRs. As you can see below, less than half of the top 10 utilized this approach and 3 of the 4 lineups that utilized 4 WRs were in the top 5! 60% of the lineups choose to spend down at the QB position to afford either the high price tag of Gronk at TE or disburse the remaining salary evenly across their WRs.

Top 10 Lineups at a Glance

Of the top 10 lineups, 100% of the lineups employed James Conner. The tourney field was also on Conner and Kamara at respective field ownerships of 25.54% and 33.51%. You need plays like these chalk plays incorporated into your lineups, even against North of 280K entrants! You can be contrarian with you lineup construction, but overly contrarian and your lineup will fail more often than not.

If you were following in Slack the #NFL-News-and-Notes channel you would have seen Geek’s Sunday Notes and he specifically stated “that the value for James Conner on the day was too much to pass up on DraftKings and especially on FanDuel where he was priced at $5,000”. You don’t get slate specific notes like these at other sites that are as detailed and slate specific as you do at DFSArmy! What a Great Call from our leader FFootballGeek!!

This is how you take down GPPs, you have your core plays and then you sprinkle in the plays at extremely low ownership across the tourney field, I.E. Fitz Magic, Mike Evans and D-Jax at an average field ownership of 1.67%!

To conclude this installment of the Shark Autopsy Report, the DFS Army was started based on the concept that bringing high-level tools, projections, and information to average players would allow them to compete on a level playing field with the DFS pros that have been dominating the industry for years. David is walking proof of concept.
