DFS NASCAR Xfinity preview for DraftKings – Johnsonville 180 at Road America

Hello again everyone, and welcome to this week’s NASCAR Xfinity preview brought to you by the DFS Army!  I’m your host @nillyJay and you can follow me here on Twitter to see my NASCAR and MLB content, or you can find me in our Slack channels in #nillys-garage-nas-mlb.

It’s about that time of the year when the regular reason starts to wind down and the playoffs are quickly approaching, but fortunately, we have several great races coming up that will make us forget that the off-season is looming.  Up first is another Xfinity-exclusive and is one that I’ve been looking forward to all season.  Let’s get to it!

Road America

The third (and final) road course of the season takes place at Road America, which is by far the longest track on the circuit.  This massive track is 4.04 miles long but we’ll only see 45 laps around it.  That should clue you in on something very important; it will be much more difficult for the expensive drivers to pay off their salaries this week!  How difficult?  Well, let’s take a look:

That is a very flat curve, and if you think back on how other races looked, this is by far the most balanced it’s been all year.  Keep that in mind as you’re building lineups this week!  For now, let’s take a look at some of the drivers we’ll have to choose from:

Xfinity drivers

Christopher Bell ($11,500) – Xfinity’s hottest driver is once again the most expensive (as we’ve come to expect by now).  He doesn’t have much experience at this track though, and his only race here ended in a 19th place finish last season.  I’m usually on board taking him in all formats no matter where he starts, but remember what I said earlier.  His starting position will be very important this week.

Justin Allgaier ($11,100) – Allgaier has a bit of experience here (6 races in the Xfinity series), and his last four finishes were 10th2nd6th, and 11th place.  He might be locked into the playoffs already, but he’ll look to use this weekend as a momentum builder (and to grab his first win here).  Still, he’s nearly expensive as Bell, so his usefulness to us might ride entirely on his starting position this week.

Elliott Sadler ($10,700) – Another experienced (though expensive) driver, Sadler has raced here 7 times and has never finished worse than 15th place.  His time in the Xfinity series is winding down though, so look for him to push his car just a little harder this weekend to try to make his way back to victory lane one last time.

Justin Marks ($10,200) – Marks was a bit of a letdown at Mid-Ohio so he’ll look to redeem himself this weekend.  He’s raced here 4 times in the Xfinity series and notched off a 7th and 4th place finish in those attempts.  He certainly knows his way around this track, but unfortunately, he also sees a hefty price increase this time (he was $9,600 at Mid-Ohio).  That, of course, puts him in the same predicament as those above him, so be sure to keep a close eye on his qualifying position.

Kaz Grala ($9,300) – Grala is back this weekend for his first race at Road America.  He’s not exactly a road course ringer (nor is he anywhere near as cheap as he was earlier in the season), so I’d be careful how much you use him this weekend.  He tends to randomly qualify very poorly, and if he does that again it could open some interesting doors.  Otherwise, proceed with caution.

JD Davison ($8,900) – Davison will make his 2018 debut this weekend and he’ll get to pilot one of the best cars in the field too.  We know what the #18 car is capable of, and Davison has plenty of experience at road courses (two wins at road courses in the Indy Light Series), so this could be an interesting combination at a decent price.  His two races here in the Xfinity series didn’t pan out very well (37th and 19th place finishes), but he’s got more in him than what those two finishes would lead one to believe.

Brendan Gaughan ($8,700) – Another road course ringer that didn’t have quite the race he’s capable of at Mid-Ohio, Gaughan has by far the most success at Road America of anybody in the field this weekend.  In his 6 races here he’s finished 16th11th5th3rd2nd, and 1st.  He’ll get another shot at it with a better car this time (the #3 RCR), and given his track record, I expect him to be a popular choice.

Matt Tifft ($8,500) – Tifft has shown a lot of road course prowess in the Xfinity series; in his 5 road course races he’s had 3 top 5’s, and one of those was a 3rd place finish at the race here last season.  He’s exactly the kind of driver we want to target this week, as he can offer the same ceiling as drivers much more expensive than he is.

Bill Elliott ($7,900) – If you haven’t heard by now, Bill Elliott will be racing this weekend.  How he’ll perform will be anybody’s guess, but either way, it’ll be awesome to see him back out there.  I can’t really make any recommendations about how to use him for DFS purposes at this point, but there was no way I couldn’t include him in this article.

Conor Daly ($7,400) – Daly is among the most experienced at road courses this week, especially at Road America.  He’s raced here, and I quote, “almost every year since I was 16 and have won there. I have driven almost every form of car, but this will be my first stock car experience.”  The fact that this will be his first stock car race here makes me lean GPP, but he’ll certainly be worth having some exposure to (especially at his price).

Driver X – There are quite a few drivers left in the lower end of the field that I have a lot of interest in, but since the cheaper ones will make or break lineups this week, I’ve got to keep them to DFS Army members.  Sorry!

And that’s going to do it for this one!  For those of you that are already DFS Army members, be sure to check out the Xfinity research station and my Slack channel after qualifying for my VIP-only notes and driver’s list, which will point out how I recommend using every single driver.  The Domination Station lineup optimizer will be ready shortly after qualifying concludes as well.
