DFS Golf: Chalk Donkey – VIP RD 3 Showdown: WGC Bridgestone

Chalk Donkey – VIP RD 3 Showdown: WGC Bridgestone

Josh Thomas, aka DFSUpNorth here for a little showdown notes for RD 3.  I write the Chalk Donkey article for VIP’s every week here at DFS Army looking at who the chalk plays are in DFS Golf and who you can pivot to. In this article, we will take a look at who I’m targeting in RD 3 showdown and weekend long contests on DraftKings and FanDuel.

A couple of quick notes to remember for round 3 showdown contests.

Tee Times:

For whatever reason, players who finish round two in 50th to 60th position crush in round 3. And its actually not even close.

Players in that 51-60 position shoot almost half a stroke better than the other nearest range. We have seen this play out on a weekly basis by targeting the guys here in the best position and watching them go nuts climbing up the leaderboard. Whether its them getting basically untouched greens early in the morning, or that there is less pressure sitting that far back on the leaderboard, whatever the reason is, targeting these players in RD 3 has been an extremely profitable strategy.

This week, since all 71 golfers make the cut, I’m going to target players in the 31-40 range. While I think that some of the reason these players score better is because they get fresh course early in the morning, the main reason I think these players do well is that they are playing good enough to make the cut, but have one part of their game that just isn’t clicking. Those type of players this week should be in the 30-40th range this week so thats where I will focus.

Salary:

Salary doesn’t matter. You may end up using your whole salary, especially in an event like this week where we have only 73 of the best players, but don’t feel bad about leaving thousands of dollars on the table. That isn’t a big deal, and usually the optimal lineups, especially in RD 3, leave lots of cash on the table.

Fantasy Points Gained/Round

In our research station at DFS Army we have a tab that is strictly for showdown and shows how many fantasy points are gained per round by each player based on the specific round. This is huge and a great way to identify guys in great spots. We also have it sorted out by AM/PM to see if someone scores better in the morning or afternoon traditionally.

Here are who the best RD 3 scorers are at the WGC Bridgestone.

Andrew Landry? That’s an interesting name… I’ll be referring back to this as I go through some of the plays for tomorrow.

Now, lets take a look at who is in play for tomorrow…

Round 3 Showdown:

Jason Day: Should be super chalky, but is in a fantastic spot. #1 in SG: Approach this week. Top 30 in putting, but struggling a bit around the green. If I was betting I’d hit him to win in tournament right now. Great weekend play on both sites as well.

Tiger Woods: Guy just absolutely mashes RD 3. At Firestone CC where he crushes. Been pretty mediocre off the tee but still able to score. Still hitting a lot of greens while not being great off the tee so I like that. Another mega chalk guy, but I can eat some and differentiate elsewhere.

Alexander Bjork: #7 in Approach, #60 in putting. T6 in Greens in Reg. You need to differentiate if you’re going to eat some chalk and he will be low single digit owned. If his putter just gets a smidge better he crushes.

Andrew Landry: I’m trusting the RS a bit on this one as he is apparently a solid RD 3 scorer. Really putted well today to help him go low. Approach and Off the tee is good. Losing strokes around the green so when he’s not hitting greens he’s struggling. In that sweet spot we’re looking for. Again, virtually unowned tomorrow.

Matt Kuchar: Lost a TON of strokes on the green today. Very un Kuch like of him. Should go low tomorrow, or at the very least Sunday. I like him in weekend maybe a bit more than showdown.

Paul Dunne: I’m using my Euro knowledge on this one. Paul Dunne is an excellent putter. Top 20 on the Euro tour and 41st here this week. Approach game was atrocious in Rd 1 but much better in RD 2. Expect him to put it together in RD 3 and have a solid round. In that 30-40 sweet spot.

Phil Mickelson: Just your standard Phil tout in showdown. The guy is a showdown machine. Makes eagles, can’t putt, great approach game. Lock him in.

Jon Rahm: Not sure how chalky he will be, but I’m going back to the well here as he’s #1 in tee to green and almost dead last in putting. He’s not an excellent putter by any means but much better than what he has done here. Literally could shoot 63 tomorrow and I wouldn’t be surprised. (Also could snap all his clubs and walk off the course like a baby, also wouldn’t be surprised)

Other guys I have some interest in:

Brooks Koepka, Henrik Stenson, Ben An, Kevin Na, Tony Finau (really interested in), Gary Woodland, Patrick Cantlay

That’s it make sure you catch up with me in Slack Chat for any other info! Good luck and lets see some green screens!
