Blande’s Bland Take: WNBA DFS Rundown and Picks 8/23/2018

Hi there! I’m Glen but I go by Blande and you can find me on twitter as @DfsBlande . I’m here over at the DFS Army with coverage of WNBA. Another two game slate, and another round of win or go home games. The stakes are as high as it gets, and you can expect the starters to dominate the minutes in these games. As a result, I highlight the key plays for each team and you can use that as a guide for the slate. Let’s dive in!

  • Los Angeles Sparks @ Washington Mystics

The Plays for the Sparks: Candace Parker, Nneka Ogwumike, Alana Beard, Riquna Williams, Chelsea Gray

Starting up top Candace Parker has a good matchup here against an average Mystic center defense. She’s playable in all formats. Nneka Ogwumike made a very nice return from illness and looks to continue her fine form tonight. She is well placed in a good matchup today. She is also one of the cheapest studs on both sites, making her extremely appealing today. Alana Beard is a defensive specialist and is only useful in DFS as a salary reliever. Utilize her in that position today in what is a neutral spot. Finally, I have no interest in Chelsea Gray today and will rather play Riquna Williams who is in a much better position and cheaper.

The Plays for the Mystics: Elena Delle Donne, LaToya Sanders, Ariel Atkins, Kristi Toliver, Natasha Cloud

I’ll begin by saying I don’t play guards versus the Sparks. That said, this is the playoffs and Kristi Toliver is playable. Especially since her matchup is against Riquna Williams. Just be careful using Toliver, as the Sparks could opt to rotate Beard onto her. Elena Delle Donne and LaToya Sanders are the key targets here. Sanders has the easier matchup of the two, but Delle Donne is the superstar. Expect both to put up strong games, and both are usable in all formats. Ariel Atkins is a sneaky play here. She has a very low floor and limited ceiling in the matchup against Beard but could make for a nice punt play. Finally, Tierra Ruffin-Pratt is one of my top punts to make for playing some studs, especially on Fanduel.

  • Phoenix Mercury @ Connecticut Sun

The Plays for the Mercury: Britney Griner, DeWanna Bonner, Stephanie Talbot, Diana Taurasi, Briann January

I’m going back to the well and stacking Bonner and Taurasi. It has been money over the past few games and there’s no need to change things when they are working. I normally don’t play guards against the Sun, but Bonner is a power forward listed as a guard, and Taurasi has owned Courtney William and the Sun this season. Griner is in play today as well, although I’m not as high on her as the other two. All three are all format plays. Talbot’s price has increased significantly, taking me slightly off her. That said, she makes for an excellent GPP play. I have zero interest in Briann January in this matchup.

The Plays for the Sun: Chiney Ogwumike, Alyssa Thomas, Shekinna Stricklen, Courtney Williams, Jasmine Thomas, Jonquel Jones

No word yet on whether Ogwumike plays tonight, hopefully we find out before lock, although I won’t hold my breath on that. If Ogwumike sits, Jones moves into the starting lineup. Either way, both of them will have their hands full dealing with Griner. My favorite play here is Alyssa Thomas. This is the kind of game specifically designed for her, one where she can exploit the defense of Bonner and potentially that of Talbot. Fire up Thomas in all formats! Courtney Williams draws the preferred matchup for the guards here. This is a great matchup for Williams and one she has exceled in this season. She makes for an excellent guard stud today. I have no interest in Jasmine Thomas in a brutal spot. Finally, Morgan Tuck makes for a sneaky GPP punt play, and we’ll need some of those today.
