DFS Army FIFA World Cup Coverage: Matchday 3 for Fanduel and Draftkings

What a fantastic first couple days for the FIFA World Cup. Who would’ve thought that Russia would score 5 goals when it looked, at times in recent matches, like they could barely get out of their own way? That puts them in the driver seat and the match with Egypt looms large. We just saw a barn burner between Spain and Portugal, in which 5 goals were scored by 2 players. Iran just won their second FIFA World Cup match ever by beating Morocco. If you follow me on twitter, @TreyJ989, you would know that in the DFS Army, we expected Iran to win this match.  Much was made about Morocco, but we were content to stand alone.  Perhaps this is enough to get you to get with the best team in the industry?

FIFA World Cup Match Breakdowns

Matchday 3 is a big day and if you are playing DFS in North America, maybe you want to avoid the first game. It’s kind of early.

France v Australia

Much has been made about Deschamp (French coach) not fully knowing which formation will best suit his players.  France has a plethora of attacking options.  They even turned away some players who might challenge for starting positions on some other squads. I am in the camp that says “why do you have to play just one formation?”. I believe they should, and ultimately will go with a 4-2-3-1, because it would directly counter what the Aussies will bring.

Australia will come in either a 4-2-3-1 or a 3-5-1-1, which they used throughout qualifying. The big reason why France should run this is that they can employ Giroud up top as the lone striker and he can run up against the small centerbacks (6’ and 5’10”) for Australia.  If 5 am EST comes around and Olivier Giroud is starting up top I am locking him in every single one of my GPP lineups. That would put Antoine Griezmann in the LAM spot and firmly into my cash lineups. Australia will try to build out of the defense but France has too much firepower, plus with 3 more games to go, I don’t want to get too bogged down with the early game.

There is a pretty good chance that France doesn’t run the 4-2-3-1 and instead runs a 4-3-3.  If that comes to pass then our targets change and the DFS Army VIPs will be ready to swerve. This is the biggest benefit of the army, a place all over the late action so you don’t miss a thing.

Argentina v Iceland

This is the main event of the day.  Most people will be playing the 3 game slate and Argentina is the biggest favorite. Let’s pause a minute to mention what a lot of people will forget: Argentina, despite all their talent, would not be in the World Cup if it weren’t for Lionel Messi. It was his hat trick in the final qualifying match that put them through. That said, I actually think this game sets up well for Messi. I think we see Messi man the right side and just make run after run at the Iceland defense. He is playable in any format.

There aren’t any big glaring things to write about on the other side of the field.  They play a defensive style and try to counter. I am not sure they can score on Argentina but I will see how I feel tomorrow.

Peru v Denmark

This match features teams ranked 11 and 12 by FIFA. If you don’t know, the rankings are a bit skewed.  In the DFS Army, we use ELO Ratings. Those separate the teams by a little more, giving the edge to Peru (10th in ELO) over Denmark (18th in ELO). By now, you have heard all about the issue with Peru’s striker and about how he is back to lead their squad.  If you wonder whether or not it’s a big deal, the answer is yes and I don’t think he is going to waste time making his presence felt. Denmark has been susceptible to attack by forwards and that is who they will see running straight at them. Paolo Guerrero is firmly in play in GPPs.

This match actually has massive group implications. This match is essentially for 2nd place in the group (on paper). I don’t expect Denmark to go down without a fight. Peru plays a hard pressing style and if you want to beat it you need to be skilled with the ball at your feet and have good vision. The ones who will be instrumental in beating the press are Christian Eriksen and Sisto.  Eriksen will be on set-pieces, which may be key to their success, and thus is in consideration in cash. Sisto has the ability to run at their defense and makes a fine GPP play.

Croatia v Nigeria

Nigeria has a lot of people buying their jerseys. I think they look cool.  Their travel suits were cool. They should look cool running up and down the pitch.  I don’t think there will be much of a result from it, however.  This is the youngest team in the tourney going up against a very sound defensive squad. One thing we like to preach is the importance of playing cash games.  A solid target for your cash games is Ivan Rakitic. He should be on some set pieces and he will have defensive duties to perform. I don’t see much scoring here as Croatia looks to slow the pace of the game down.

So there you have it.  That is just the tip of the iceberg for matchday 3.  There is much more in the way of picks, stats, semi-witty banter waiting within the friendly confines of the DFS Army. To the VIPs, Let’s crush! To those on the outside, good luck.
