Schnarr’s Super Picks DraftKings and FanDuel PGA Preview – The Players Championship

Every week of the year the PGA Tour plays on a new course. There are some examples in other DFS Sports of environments impacting performance, such as Coors Field in Baseball; Golf, however, offers an entirely unique environment each and every week. This article will break down the week’s PGA course and attempt to find what skill sets are needed for success. This article will then combine the course breakdown with the DFS Army Domination Station & VIP Research Station and give a few players who are interesting options for DraftKings and FanDuel in both Cash Game and GPP formats. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr

Before we being it was a big weekend here at the DFSArmy with member mwilliams52581 winning over $75,000 on Nascar.  He wasn’t the only winner here at DFSArmy with many more winning thousands of dollars across Nascar, NBA, MLB and PGA contests.

The Wells Fargo Championship Recap

 Rory McIlroy – T16 – 74 DK Points.

Despite ridiculous course history McIlroy ended up seeing himself less owned than Justin Thomas, and within percentages of the other players over $10,000 depending on which GPP you were in. McIlroy had the second best performance out of the top end studs, falling quite short of Jason Day’s 114 fantasy points. Given the course history I still feel McIlroy was a great play given his ownership despite him not performing the best out of the elite group of players.

Brooks Koepka – T42 – 60.5 DK Points

Koepka saw average ownership of 4.5% across major GPP’s which made him a great target once it was understood that Brooks felt he has fully recovered from his past injury. Although the result was not spectacular, anytime you can get an elite player so low-owned in GPP’s the risk becomes worth it in my belief.

Adam Hadwin – T16 – 66.5 DK Points

Hadwin was one of my favourite Cash game plays despite not so great course history. For his price, Hadwin simply made sense in cash games given his recent performance despite the course not necessarily playing to his strengths.

Xander Schaufelle – T72 – 44.5 DK Points

I ended up playing Xander quite heavily as I thought the ownership would be rather low as it would split amongst other players at the same price. While I was (sort of) right about the lower ownership Xander was unable to make anything happen on the weekend and ended up with one of the lowest scores of players who made the cut for the week.

Luke List – T9 – 77.5 DK Points

List became the chalk amongst his loaded salary and received nearly 30% average ownership across major GPP’s. Despite the ownership concerns List was able to outscore every player within his salary range making him the player to have on the $7500-$7300 range on DraftKings.

The Players Championship Preview

The PGA Tours unofficial “fifth major” takes place at the iconic TPC Sawgrass in Florida. The course is known by many for the island green par 3, 17th, but there is so much more for fans and spectators to take in. The par 72 measures 7189 yards, which is very short for PGA Tour standards. Instead of length, the course challenges players to be extremely accurate or risk putting up big numbers. The Pete Dye design sees extremely tight and narrow fairways throughout and there is also water in play on just about every hole of the event.

Off of the tee, we see a large portion of the players club down and avoid using their driver in many instances. Because of how narrow and short the course is players can club down on many holes and still have short approach shots (if they can stay on the fairway). While the tightness of the fairways and potential hazards lead me to favour driving accuracy over driving distance, (although players who are extremely long off of the tee have won here before) because of players constantly clubbing down I will be putting less emphasis on driving in general this week.

Shots Gained: Approach will be my main point of emphasis this week (as it often is) as the second shot will be critical this week. Whether a player is attempting to give himself a legitimate birdie attempt or scrambling after an errant tee shot, the second shot will be crucial for overall success at TPC Sawgrass.  I will be looking at recent performances using our VIP Research Station to find players who have been gaining strokes in recent rounds and attempting to find the players reading for a breakout performance.

Par five scoring is another area I will be targeting this week. Even some of the shorter hitters on tour should have no problem reaching three of the four par fives this week and many in the field have all four within their range. Not only is it important for tournament success but also critical for DraftKings and FanDuel scoring that players take advantage of these holes.

Finally, Strokes Gained: Around the Green will be getting a little more attention from me this week than usual. Last week, Jason Day showed just how important this stat can be as he basically won the event because of his play around the greens. With a tough Pete Dye course and plenty of trouble, players that can save strokes where the rest of the field is losing them can put themselves in a great position for success.

Key Stats

-Strokes Gained: Approach

-Strokes Gained: Around the Green

-Par five scoring

-Birdie or better %

 Interesting Plays

This article marks one year of writing for me here at DFSArmy and will also be the article where I change up the format. As this article is first-look by nature, instead of picking specific players I will instead by looking at interesting plays based on price, injury, ownership, etc. We just added a new writer at DFSArmy (welcome, dfsupnorth) who will be dropping a VIP article later in the week looking at players, as well as all three of the PGA Contributors dropping individual notes in our company SlackChat later in the week. So without further adieu, here are some interesting players to keep an eye on as the week progresses.

Jason Day – DK: $11400 FD:$12100

For those that have not been following all that much, Jason Day has sneakily been putting together the best season of the year. Day has two wins in five starts of 2018 with no finishes outside of the top 22. Last week, Day’s stats were not the great and he won based off of a ridiculous performance around the green. Could this keep people off of him? Or will his win last week and great recent performance make Day the high-end chalk?

Tommy Fleetwood – DK: $8200 FD: $10300

Fleetwood has been very popular in fantasy formats and for good reason. With no finish outside of the top forty leading into the week Fleetwood provided a consistent floor with potential to finish atop the leaderboard. At The Wells Fargo Championship Fleetwood was the highest owned player on average across DraftKings GPP’s only to miss his first cut of the year. With a better field and a missed cut, Fleetwood sees a big price decrease on DraftKings. Will his recent missed cut lower ownership? Or will fantasy players forgive Fleetwood and go back to the player that has been consistently winning them money week in and week out.

Louis Oosthuizen – DK: $7700 FD: $9400

Last season showed his form coming into the event did not necessarily mean he couldn’t compete. Oosthuizen just missed the cut last week, but showed his game is there at the Masters with a T12 finish. Which Oosthuizen will we get this week and will the ownership remain low with so many viable options priced under him?

The $7500 Range on DraftKings (Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Emiliano Grillo, Brian Harman, Zach Johnson)

This range is LOADED with popular players that you can all make a case for rostering. While Brian Harman and Zach Johnson would be the two I would expect to receive the least of the ownership it will be interesting to see how it breaks down and who great, low-owned pivot plays end up being.

As I mentioned, with three writers there are lots of opinions being given out to VIP members later in the week closer to lock. I will be going over all of these plays and my thoughts for cash later in the week on our company slackchat.
