eSports Acing Basic Training – What is eSports DFS

eSports Basic Training

So you want to expand on that DFS fun now that NFL is coming to a close.  I highly recommend NBA where we have some of the best coaches in DFS.  We also have great advice for NHL, PGA, MMA, Soccer and more all being provided by high-quality coaches.  If this sounds great and you want even more, I suggest you expand to a game that feels built for DFS. eSports is still in its early years, but as it grows in popularity so does the DFS side. I am going to use this article to help you learn eSports and get introduced to what I believe is the greatest future of DFS.

Why Play eSports

DFS is all about scoring, the reason NBA works so well as a DFS sport is its constant scoring.  The constant scoring means lineups constantly change.  The great thing about League of Legend is there can be constant action.  This helps you enjoy those lineups as they climb.  You can even go from outside the cash line, to crushing the cash line with one great multi-kill from your Mid/ADC.

The Positions

In League of Legends, we are given five positions to choose from. The Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, and Support.  Of these the most important for fantasy are Mid and ADC.  Last split the best mid players were leaps and bounds ahead of the 2nd tier Mid players.  The best ADCs were just a few points better than even the bottom tier ADC players.  This means we should put the most budget into the Mid most weeks followed by ADC.

Top and Support are often just a few points separated from the top tier to the bottom tier.  They are not often the highest scoring position.  This is not always the case as any week a great top can go off, but on average they are not a place to pay up for.  The best Supports, however, are always from the best LCS teams.  This means the safest and “smartest” play will always be the most costly.

Jungle players are often great places to gain fantasy points but are also almost always underpriced.  A top tier Jungle pick will often come in at a few 1000 less than their top mid/ADC counterparts.

The last spot on the roster is the team slot, which we will be talking about more further down.  Team slots are the cheapest slot, and even bad teams can get good scores.  While losing teams can score well it is best to focus on winners.  There are standout teams who are great at objection captures and worth focusing on.  Using the stud team at stud price is often not the best option for fantasy, but more on that later.

Draftkings Setup

The only site that is offering us eSports at the moment, that I would want to play on at least (as there may be smaller sites out there) is Draftkings.  If you are new to DFS but not new to eSports, and you would like to start doing DFS I have a great deal for you.  Use the link on the right, under “Featured Sites” and you can join Draftkings with some great stuff added, including a free month of the DFS Army VIP.  That means you will get to learn NBA, NHL, MMA, eSports, PGA, and EPL (soccer) for one month for no cost!  You will also gain access to the DFS Army DOMINATION STATION for one whole month free of charge, to help you build all of those NBA lineups.

Roster Construction

On Draftkings you need to fill a roster using a salary cap of 50,000 and build an 8-man roster.  This roster will have

  • Top
  • Jungle (jng)
  • Mid
  • ADC
  • Support (sup)
  • 2 Flex (any position you want)
  • Team (this is played like a defense in football)

As we discussed the Mid/Adc are the highest scoring positions in LoL. Therefore they are the most common spots to pay up for as well as use in the Flex slot.  JNG are a great way to save salary in Flex to allow a few stud Mid players or a stud Mid/ADC combo.

The Different Styles of Lineup Construction

Draftkings requires us to pick teams that seem like they are in bad situations.  This is because the players in the best situation are almost always priced high.  There are times when 2 good teams will face off and their price is more in the middle of the pack.  The problem here is unless you stack both sides you would find it hard to team stack either side without punting elsewhere.

Team Stacks – when I talk about team stacks I am talking about focusing our roster on as many from 2 teams as we can.  We might use one team’s Top/Mid/ADC/Sup/team.  Then use another team’s JNG/Mid/ADC.  This is normally done by picking a stud team and then using a punt team in a good spot to finish out the roster.

Pick and Choose – Another method that can work is picking Studs in the best spots and then filling in other top plays. I personally like this done best when you team stack a bloody match, and then fill in the final spots with hand picked studs.

The team stack method is often the best scoring option, as long as the games you picked turns into a blood bath.  If there are fewer kills you may find yourself struggling behind everyone else.  I like this method for cash and gpp, but it does carry more risk if you are wrong in your game selection.  When right you are going to get more points from each member than you often get when you pick individuals.  You can even completely stack the whole team if the matchup is just that good.

How To Point

What This Means

For us when it comes to DFS we want to find players with a high Kill Participation (KP) those who are 75% or higher are great targets.  KP is earned when a player is involved in a kill whether it is the killing blow or the assist.  A player who has a high KP and is in an expected bloody match will be given a lot of chances at points.

The next stat we can focus on is KDA which means Kill Death Average.  First, when a player is dead they lose a point which hurts our score directly.  Second, when a player is dead they cannot do damage or be involved in kills for a length of time.  That time changes and gets longer as the game is played meaning fewer deaths gives more chances for points earned.

The last thing is a player who is in a Best of Three (BO3) will gain points for any match not played as long as they win.  This means a player who scores 2-0 will not only get the points from the match but gain another 20 just for winning.  Now here is the catch on the bonus 20.  If the match is very bloody, that 3rd game may be worth more than 20 points.  If the match is very one sided, the bonus 20 could give you a saving score.  I like the 2 win bonus most for Top’s and Sup’s and sometimes JNG.
