NFL Reaction Monday: Cowboys vs 49ers – WTF Was That Final Play?

Social media was abuzz late last night after the Dallas Cowboys seemingly blew a few late plays that could’ve cost them the game, sending the 49ers into the NFC Championship game next week vs the Philadelphia Eagles.

Perhaps the strangest of all was that final play call and formation.  Twitter was left scratching its collective head…

The Cowboys had that final shot all lined up.  Just like I remember drawing things up in the dirt when I was nine years old in my neighborhood vacant lot’s dirt.

Here is that final play…

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t appeared in the NFC Championship game in the 2000s yet.  They are in the midst of a 27-year drought when it comes to the conference title game.  Here are a couple more plays in the final minutes that probably qualify as chokes…

  • Punting the ball back at 2:05 remaining.  This deft move very feasibly gives the 49ers the best chance at just running the clock out.
  • Dak Prescott taking a sack on the first play of the final drive.
  • Dalton Schultz failing to stop the clock AFTER going out of bounds because he wasn’t moving forward.
  • Dalton Schultz failing to get both feet down on a routine sideline catch.
  • That strange final play referenced above.

Multiple chokes aside, the final play is the focal point of social media’s attention…rightfully so.

And, one of my personal favorites…

Well, Cowboys fans…there’s always next season. 🤣
