NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 1/3/23

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Big slate here with some high priced options as well as some sneaky stacks. I am back and ready to share what little hockey knowledge I have with you guys. Like always I have 2 primary stacks to build around, but one of my favorite secondary stacks is the Senators at home against the Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets tend to struggle against Ottawa in recent years, and the Senators sport a decent top line. I also enjoy the Leafs against the Blues, in a revenge spot after the Leafs’ last tough game against them. Nashville at home against Montreal, as well as Lightning stacks against the lowly Blackhawks. Now, let’s dive into my favorites.

Correlated Snipe #1

Alex Ovechkin – Evgeny Kuznetsov – Erik Gustafsson

This is a game stackable situation against the Sabres who love to score but also concede a bunch of goals. Ovechkin has been on a tear this season passing Howe in goals, and now the chase is on for Wayne. No real analysis here in regards to Ovechkin other than he is a machine, and the matchup is very good. Kuznetsov is probably the Capitals’ most talented center, and he has finally has been playing with Ovechkin recently, which is very nice to see. Gustafsson has hat-trick upside as shown earlier this year against the Leafs, and his offensive upside comes out in a cost effective way when John Carlson sits; and, it looks like Carlson may sit again. These 3 should correlate on the top powerplay unit as well, which is what I am always shooting for. The Capitals are just primed and loaded for bear in this situation.

Correlated Snipe #2

Connor McDavid – Zach Hyman

Super duper simple here guys. The Oilers are at home. Connor McDavid s the most dominant athlete in sports right now. Zach Hyman has been his line-mate for most of the season. McDavid failed to register a point in his last game, which really hurts his pace. The law of averages is whispering to me and saying that McDavid puts up at least 3 points against the Kraken. The Kraken’s goalies are also pretty bad, even though their team is good. Don’t overthink it; McDavid is a great play, and nearly a cash game lock.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Adam Boqvist – Cheap defenseman for the Blue Jackets that runs their top powerplay unit.

Grinder #2

Matt Duchene – Insulting salary on DraftKings, even though Nashville can’t figure out their lineup; roster with caution.

Grinder #3

Eeli Tolvanen – Young guy claimed off of waivers by the Kraken from the Predators. Kid plays a middle 6 role as well as the top powerplay unit. He loves to shoot, and he may have Chemistry with Oliver Bjorkstrand.
